I think it's already over priced at 159 for the blue. Costco price makes it a little ok. I can think of so much more whiskey to buy at $129.99 than the blue.

however for a gift that's a great deal!

completely agree. There's lots of single malts that can be had for that much. That's what makes it hard to pull the trigger on a blended whisky. You don't even know what's in there...lol

I don't think you can beat Famous Grouse (as a blend anyway) - half and half with water brings out the fruity and smokey flavours! and its only around £15 a bottle (I think that's still under 25$). However, my current go-to bottles are my Laphroaig 10yr, or my Old Pulteney 12yr depending on my mood....

Hey Ubpfc, Johnny Blue 750ml for $125 right now at my local Costco. Gotta love California and Costco prices!

Oh yea they should totally have it at Sam's! And check on slickdeals, that's where I found the sale prices first a while back. Gluck.

Sadly SAMs here in Arkansas only sells beer and wine, no liquor. WTF is that all about. $124 for the blue is cheaper than I get it duty free.

Great collection. I've never been one to favour single over blended. Both are incredible. Blended use single malts after all and just add wheat/corn whiskies. Apart from that the only difference is pot stills (single) and column stills (blended).

For me blended seems to lack characteristics compared to singles but they still taste fine [emoji14]

Pherhaps it's a bad batch. It usually reminds me of Talisker 10y but a bit softer.

How are you guys able to keep a collection of whisky? Every time I get a new bottle, I'll have to open it and get a dram. I have a few that I use as a daily dram but I normally finish whatever I open in less than 6 months regardless of how many other bottles I have. I cannot resist on not opening a bottle whenever I buy one.

do you guys buy the A couple of bottles of the same thing then open one and keep the other in the collection?

After University, it was encouraged to develop an interest and appreciation for different whisky's, representing a Scottish company overseas. Can't say I've ever been a fan of Blends (Chivas is the only one I would consider in that category), and I am more into Single Malts. I haven't read the whole thread, so forgive me if I am reposting, although I found the tasting matrix's, such as this one below, being central to my ability to differentiate in the learning process and thus provide recommendation to overseas clients and associates.

As has been pointed out, Islay is by far the 'richest' and 'smokiest' of all malts and is definitely an acquired taste - happens to be my favourite also. Of course, with these matrixes, they don't often provide the clearest of tasting notes, particularly when you are referring to Brand X' 16/18/20 and so on.

My personal favourites include Lagavulin, Caol Ila, Jura Prophecy, Highland Park (all on the peaty side, drank with a few pipette drops of quality mineral water) or if neat, Glenlivet 21 is sweet as hell (total opposite end of the spectrum from the above).

Good Health.
