@Michaelarena89

I would look for a gen parts in this order
Insert- probably what you see the most
Dial- because is it really a franken with a rep dial?
Crystal- once you go quality it’s hard to like the cheap stuff
Crown/tube- cheapish upgrade
Hands
Bezel assembly
Others might say hands are a bigger priority but I personally can’t tell the difference with nicer hands.

I spent this morning doing some watch building

Thanks @KJ2020 for all the advice as everything went smoothly so far.

I added some chamfers to the case, reduced the rehaut height, smoothed out and re brushed the lugs, slightly aged the case to match the Gen bezel, installed the rep tube with loctite, installed the movement, gen dial, Gen crown and gen hour hand. Phew.

Now I’m just waiting on the other 3 hands, and some 1.8mm shoulderless soring bars. When installed. I’ll then attempt to press the bezel on (and keep the date window and numbers in line (dreading that part!)) and it will be done by the end of the week… all being well!

Any tips on installing explorer 2 bezels?!

Thanks again for such a great thread.

My cheap AliExpress press wouldn’t press it on. I got it started on that, then used a small bench vice, which was way easier. Not sure if that is the proper way, or if my gasket was causing trouble but it was my method. (with rubber protector between case/bezel/vice)
I left a very small gap at the top between the bezel and case to make it easier to pry it apart if needed.
KJ made a good post above about gasket height for proper date mag.

Finished my 16570 build today using hands from cousins. The second hand had to be broached to fit the pinion but everything else went smoothly. This case is phenomenal, I’ve built what I would say is a 2002/2003 version using the holes case with SuperLume dial and feels 1:1 in every way (after the slightest bit of case work, adding chamfers and brushing the lugs ). Im amazed that with crystal fitted It’s exactly 12.2mm thick (same as Gen) I’ll test fit some bracelets later but for now the watch will get its deserved tool watch feel and use on the nato.

Couple of issues to note after completion of my project.

Looks like the caseback is slightly too tight for the movement and means the rotor doesn’t spin freely. The watch stopped after 20 hours and I’ve had to manually wind. I think it could be down to using the wrong case screws, going to order some Rolex ones and hope this keeps the movement a tiny bit closer to the rehaut and allows a fraction of a millimetre inside the case to allow the rotor to spin.

Struggling to fit a Gen bracelet even with 1.8mm spring bars. I’ve also tried a cartel 93150 and a raffles bracelet to no joy.

Both fit easily on my 16710 viet case.

Something you can try with a bracelet - use a regular shouldered springbar and add some tape to it to make it fit more snugly in the SEL hole.

See post #101 in this thread.

I was able to fit an ARF bracelet with both a 1.5mm springbar + 6 strips of tape, and a 1.8mm springbar + 1 strip of tape.

Thanks mate. I actually managed to get the cartel bracelet to fit nicely. I just dont like the angle of the first centre link that sits inside the end link. But one day I may invest in a better bracelet.

3 of these case specific reworked on my spec will be ready for franken project base on 16570 with some gen parts. Two of this, or maybe all three, will be for sure sold here on forum.

Stay tuned :)

Something that makes the assembly easier is to put the tension ring (washer) into the bottom of the bezel after the insert is installed. Then thread the click in between the washer and the insert as you pull the bezel back into position to snap it home.

Especially with rep or aftermarket parts, fitment can be less than ideal and parts can get jammed up during a re-install.
I am having issues with my bezel assembly… 🥲 bezel is from watchparts.de (also washer) while i got the crystal retaining ring and click spring WHO. Problem is that I managed to press the bezel onto the crystal retaining together with the washer…but the bezel won rotate…it just remains stuck in position.

What you think the issue may be?

It so dammi frustrating I am about to give up on the build..cant move any further

Don't give up bro. You've got the click stuck either under the washer or under the bezel teeth. The click needs to be very carefully threaded like in my pic you quoted. Pull the bezel back very slowly while making sure the click stays touching the bezel teeth, even so far as making the click bend go in between teeth. You ARE using a GMT click and not a Sub click right? The click HAS to stay put before you press the bezel down onto the retaining ring.

I know this can be a PITA. Sometimes an aftermarket click can be too strong or too long, etc. You might try a different one or even bend this one back a little if it's too strong. It usually takes two sets of needle nose pliers to bend these or one pliers and a pin vise. Be gentle bending as they can break if over stressed.

I might also suggest pressing it on without the click spring. This way you can see if your bezel and retaining ring from two different suppliers are compatible. If it still won’t turn, try without the washer.

If it works, then try with the spring.
