does anyone have a tip where to get a good condition 16710 dial?

The prices are kinda crazy right now on ebay etc. - I don't want to pay 800€ for a very bad condition dial..

I got a mint dial, hands, date wheel set from firstclassdials on eBay for $900. Maybe message them and see if they have anything in the pipeline or if you can negotiate a deal.

Welcome to the cokeplorer club!

Getting ready for the fantasy build !

@RDRoss

I just ordered the WSO 18k bezel and assembly from ewatchparts.
Also ordered a SS gmt bezel as it was only $104, even though the SS startime one is recommended
Sometimes we just need to learn the hard way I guess.
I will give everyone an update once it arrives in ....about a month or whatever.
Also a 7330 crowntube and ceramic bezel for the other build.

EBay Canada, guy has a dial for $1200, it’s been there a few weeks, low offer?
and I just saw two hand sets for the polar for $300usd at first class dials. Com which seems expensive but the polar hand sets weren’t cheap when I was looking 6 months ago.

Something that makes the assembly easier is to put the tension ring (washer) into the bottom of the bezel after the insert is installed. Then thread the click in between the washer and the insert as you pull the bezel back into position to snap it home.

Especially with rep or aftermarket parts, fitment can be less than ideal and parts can get jammed up during a re-install.
OK at this stage, I see how it goes on but how much pressure should I be applying?

The bezel is not snapping on, I feel like any more pressure and something is going to bend.

The crystal ring is ST and the bezel/washer is Ernst/Westphal.

Try fitting the bezel onto the retaining ring with nothing else - no washer, no click, no insert. Set the bezel on top and look carefully all the way around to see if the bezel bottom inside perimeter is too small to fit around the retaining ring bottom outside perimeter.

On another project, I had to shave all 3 WSO bezels there for them to fit their own WSO retaining ring.

Hard to tell if there's room.

My gen has as always pressed on by hand with less than moderate pressure. When the WSO bezels would not press on at all, I started removing material from the bezel bottom inside perimeter until they did.

You can wrap some 400 grit paper around a round handle tool (I use a hand lever) and apply the paper to the metal then rotate the handle around the ring like turning a crank. Check fit often and don't take too much off, haha!

For those trying to build a TT GMT
The WSO 18k bezel arrived, $50 ish shipping to Canada, only $15 duty/tax somehow.
Heavier than the SS version of course.
Clicked right on to the retaining ring and spins freely using my thumbs, will try with the washer in there later, don’t want to bend it by being in a rush.
Overall pretty happy! Nice light gold Color. Insert pearl looks crappy.

If you know where to look at a certain angle or under macro, the finishing on the top side of the teeth isn’t great in places.

Bro if you tape some ultra fine grit sandpaper (5000 - 7000 grit) to a bench and turn the bezel upside down, you can sand the rim lightly and make it smooth. Ofc this assumes your bezel is solid gold.

You can also hold the bezel on an angle and swipe it across the sandpaper along the tops of the outside teeth to improve their appearance. These are things I do regularly with both 5 and 6 digit bezels along with coarser sanding (400 grit) of the lower outer perimeter where it is brushed.

Before doing anything though, I would check the fit of your gen insert. My ST bezel needed the upper rim sanded back to fit a gen insert as you may recall. My WSO bezels all fit a gen insert but not a snap fit and hold. They needed some carefully applied epoxy on top of the inside teeth. YMMV.

Even after preparing the ST SS bezel above to be plated, I decided to use one of my WSOs because the outside teeth are more gen-like (less downward slope). I'll use the ST bezel in another build.

I sent a modded (sanded and brushed) WSO SS bezel to be plated.

I’ve actually sold the explorer now but to be fair I wore it mainly on a nato, a true tool watch!

Finally got it together. For this noob, it seemed like a pretty straight forward build, though I did read a lot before starting. THANKS RWI !!!

My intent for this build is a well used Coke-Plorer that could get banged around while doing chores.

All of these random pieces went together pretty well. There was a hangup with fit between the ST crystal ring and E&W bezel, @KJ2020 was very helpful. There are also a lot of other little things to sort out; better crystal alignment, tweak stem length adjustment, waterproofing, movement service. I just could't see at all those parts just sitting there anymore.

Now it fits right between my gen 16570 and 16700

Here's the breakdown (USD) of the build for those interested
  • ebay case, I like to call it the German 16710 case, $350 (I got it very early last fall before price increase)
  • Gen dial off ebay, $205, a little rough but that's what I was going for
  • Gen handset $200 and Gen CAR crystal $150, AR is just better, thanks @CarpetRyd
  • Gen 604 crown $95, thanks @Josh650
  • Gen Coke insert $90, Firstclasssdials, also a pretty rough
  • Gen SEL bracelet from my gen 16570 (which now has a red Everest strap)
  • VR3186 $150, out of a Batman from @Abduljay
  • eBay swiss made 24-5330 case tube $11, no ss washer, will probably go gen eventually
  • Crystal ring from ST $40
  • Spring bars (1.8mm) and misc gaskets from Esslinger $10
  • Bezel, washer, click spring from Ernst/Westphal $125
Total: PRICELESS !!!
