An illusion has been created over many years that a thing that tells time is worth $20,000 or $50,000. That's what marketers strive to achieve. And that's what powerful brands do over time.
A guy posted on one of these forums that worked at Rolex that a Rolex cost $500 plus the cost of precious metals used or diamonds to make. So rep pricing is what these things are actually worth and if they get stolen lost or scratched there is little attachment.
Many guys on here have mentioned they can afford gens but many of these reps are so good that it's a waste of money to buy gen. So are we stupid or smarter than a guy wearing a gen is the question?
I would argue that a watch (like anything else) is worth what people are willing to spend on it.
It really doesn't matter what it cost for them to build it. You gotta remember, Rolex has spent decades designing watches, engineering in-house movements and spending countless millions on R&D and Marketing to build quality and brand loyalty. When you see that ROLEX logo, you're also paying for all of this.
Are you smarter wearing a rep? - that's up to you to decide. Like I mentioned, many Genuine owners would NEVER buy a replica because they feel it is dishonest to take that Rolex logo (and all those years of design, R&D and Marketing) and slap it on a chinese watch with a $10.00 movement.
I'm not being hypocritical because I own reps, I'm just saying - there's a large portion of watch wearers who would never think of buying one.
