I really think we should rest the stock talk in this tread, start a new tread with "How to make money (or not) on the stock market" :)

Called the 80/20 rule bro. Also I attached articles from CNN that backed up my claim. You think most people win or lose in Vegas? Financial markets are the same. Not sure why you think there's no risk in investing and everyone is profiting??

Agreed. I apologize I was just making a statement about gens as investments. Not really a forum to argue about the stock market or investments. Let's move on. :)

No need to apology man:) Been going through this tread for days and the sideways it offers are actually great :)

I wonder, we need a forum festival, held once a year in Vegas for three days (or anywhere). Damn we would discuss everything and nothing about reps, ha ha. Would we need bodyguards ???

Lots of Idiots in this thread, I would get out as its just silly talk in here now! If a swiss watch is a bad investment then go to HQ milton and look at the price of a Rolex from the 60s that once sold for $250

yeah but those people were just lucky. same as all the people who bought Autavias which have rocketed in recent years. if you had to buy a watch today that you could project that is going to be worth 100 times its value in another 30 years could you? this started because someone suggested buying a SD as an investment.. sorry but no way. it will maintain its price and go up with inflation, but its never gonna be rare or high on a collectors list unless its a rare Ref: which its not.. its the most common

expensive watches are only good for people who have enough money in the bank to spend thousands then if everything goes tits up its an asset to sell. the same as art

To sum it up if you buy a watch as an investment...
Do: purchase a rare or limited edition watch from an established brand.
Don't: purchase a watch everybody has, no matter how luxurious.

Still won't guarantee it's gonna generate profit in the end, but at least you get higher chances that way. Me, I'll pass, since I don't have enough spare cash to invest on watches that may generate profit aftet 20 yrs.

Now to get back on topic, I keep reading about ZF's iwc5001 having inconsistent build quality. Does it still qualify as a super rep even now?

JFTR: The latest model is not 5001 but 5007. I did not purchase any ZF rep for a couple of months now, so I don't know if they improved their assembly quality - what they definitely should have done indeed.

I think mine is worth buying in gen as reps don't even come close. The day that a rep comes within 95% looks and feel, I'll sell it and buy the rep.

Do the same with Apple stock in the 80's bud......see how dumb of a cherry picked example that is now? "Investing" in a watch is what people who can't afford to buy a gen tell themselves to justify spending Little Tommy's college fund on jewelry....

The reality is that between inflation and opportunity cost you'd always be better off investing in a cash flowing asset than speculating on the future value of some watch.

You're more than welcome to spend your money on what you want, but don't spread the lie you tell to yourself as fact....

Completely agree and I have over $250000 in gens. But I do not see it as any kind of investment.

Many people see watches as investments.
"According to Knight Frank’s 2014 Luxury Investment Index, watches are expected to appreciate 68 percent over 10 years. (The greatest growth, however, is projected for classic cars, at 487 percent.)"

Of course lots of people say lots of things. I have been reading this kind of stuff for the 25 years I have been active collecting watches. It comes under the heading of BS and Hype. Try to go and sell all the 32 and 34 mm mens watches that were once so popular. In watches yes, there will be some weddings, but also a lot of funerals.

I think you may want to check the definition of an investment. Also check to see how many "investments" provide returns. Investing in watches or cars or stamps, coins, comic books etc are still investments.
