Not worth buying in gen

Great topic - I hope I'm not taking this on a tangent, but, it begs the question (and I'd value any input):

QUESTION: To sell my GEN or not to sell… I have one Gen and several reps. My Gen is a beautiful Rolex 116710 (Latest Model GMT Master II). My (primary) reps include an HR 5517, HR 6538, TC 16610lv (recently purchased used) and a TC 16610 Extreme on its way (one month into my three month waiting period.)

My problem is this – there is afford and then there is afford. My gen is long since paid for and I don’t seem to have any trouble making ends meet. HOWEVER, the gen purchase represented no small investment on my part. So, while the watch was made to be manhandled, I lament every scratch, and every ding. Whereas, the HR’s and the TC, I end up wearing 75% of the time. I beat the snot out of them (well, not so much the TC) and they come out looking even better.

The Gen is my trophy watch. It makes me feel good when I wear it – reminding me of a very successful year. But, it is a case queen. The reps are my daily wearers. Because I purchased the Gen used, I can get out of it almost what I paid. And, I gotta say, the NOOB version, with the correct stack, looks pretty good.

It’s funny, more attention is paid to these reps than I ever paid to my Gen. Fact is, at age 48, I need to put on reading glasses just to read the darn thing – so you can bet, I’m not admiring the ‘chamfers’ or the sharpness of the logo…

Would love to be one of those guys that straps on his Rollie and never takes it off. Perhaps, when I get my TC extreme, that is what I’ll do…

Love the RWI community, by the way…

Why would you sell it though? Doesn't sound like you need dough. It's ok if it sits in the case a lot and is taken out for special occasions only... not sure what the quandary is.

Awesome thread. I'm very interested in the Omega Seamaster 300 but the factories weren't specified in the list like some of the other models.

Which versions are considered the "super reps?" The pics reflect the models I like, could be leather band or stainless steel bracelet models. Could be black dial or blue dial, just generally want to know which Seamaster versions specifically belong on the Not Worth Buying in Gen list.

Thanks!

90 percent is design and marketing, so please be more open-minded

Everyone has their own opinion and ways to justify themselve for buying a rep / gen. When it comes to rolex especially their newer ceremic sports models then you are actually paying for whats its worth which are their quality, workmanship and design. Every single parts from the movement to their stainless steel casing are made exclusively by their own factory so if u ask me whether its worth spending $8000 on a gen sub C then yes definitely because everything about the watch is worth every penny. Nothing can beat the "feel" and flawlessnes of the gen. Or you can save the money, get the noob v7 and deal with all their obvious tells like the cyclop and SEL. Then again its just my opinion and many other can disagree with me and come up with their own justification on why its not worth the gen but honestly i couldnt care less neither. I will only spend on what i think its worth. Gen sub c for $8000 if i had the money yes i will definitely buy it but if youre talking about Hublot Big Bang or AP Roo then no, id rather sattle for a rep because its not worth to me even if i can afford it.

How many different gen rolexes have you held to say nothing beats their "flawlessness"? In my experience buying and selling watches, gen and reps alike, I'd really only call 7 out of 10 rolexes flawless, even if the only flaw is a 120 click bezel factory aligned one click off. I've seen gens with uncentered date wheels and slightly misalligned Cyclopses as well. IMHO, an 8000 sub c is probably at best worth half of what Rolex charges for it.

+1

They even lower down the budget to 500 dollars to produce one thats the reason why the new engravings are shit and the bezel are not polished anymore (not the ceramic one the things outside the bezel).

Lol. Yeah reading glasses to see your watch. That must be irksome. Luckily I am near sighted so I can always see my watch in glorious detail (because it top of that my eyes have unusual acuity).
So my problem is the reverse, I see every little dust speck and microscopic irregularities. Therefore I like my gens but also have a Pam 510 rep. It's all about it being affordable to me and good enough; Panerai have good reps, but not the Omega seamaster or Ball or Grand Seiko (at all). Oh well, just my two cents.

I think the H factory Breitling Steelfish should be included in this is if it isn't already. Excellent build quality and it looks damn close to gen from what I can see online

I think to produce a watch costs not more than 1k for them. Sure marketing, design, research is another topic

I don't think the research budget chez Rolex is very big. Basic movements unchanged in essence for many many years, a couple of basic complications , like the annual calendar Sky dweller (2nd ugliest watch on the planet after the Clownmaster) A funny blue spring and very late with ceramics, beaten by such illustrious names as Rado and Chanel(FFS) I am not dissing them(I have a few) but lets be realistic, they are so basic they won't even risk an exhibition back.
It took them till 2000 to make their own Chronograph movement. Granted it is one of the nicest around. But it is not exactly rocket science.

I am very glad that all the gen Rolex you see are "Flawless" I have owned plenty of them and still have some. My experience is that they are very rarely flawless and sometimes very flawed. Stay lucky:happy:
