What's the big deal about Panerai? Why do people like them?

Ironically, Isn't Sylvester wearing a big pilot in that pic above?

Who knows, my eyes are a little blurry right now.

After seeing all the paintings in my house, someone once asked me what kind of paintings I look for to acquire.....oil, water based, abstract, realist, etc....

I thought about it for a while and I really didn't have an answer. What I said to him finally was...." I look at a painting. If it moves me, then I like it"...period.

I look at Pams...gen or rep...and they move me.

They are just beautiful....period.

I'd never heard of Panerai before joining the forums late last year. And at first initially being a brand queen I thought nothing of them. I was after a Rolex Milgauss Pro-Hunter.

I read a bit, looked a bit, read a bit more and my first purchase was a 111.

I sold a Tag Monaco I was bought by a friend in the far east and then used the money to get my father in law a Radiomir, should arrive soon, he's dead excited and he too had never heard of Panerai but is mesmerised by the movement on my 111.

I genuinely believe the movement has some sort of hypnotic powers and once you catch a glimpse of it your hooked.

My heart is set on a 292M (thanks Del, your fault - damn pictures you keep posting) problem is the wallets empty at the moment. Hey on the bright side only 9 months till Christmas lol.

Anyway my view is everyone should have at least one in their collection.

If I ever win the lottery there's a few gen people on RWG that will get one in the post.

This story is exactly similar as mine. I joined to forums to get a Pro Hunter, then after a lot of reading my first pam was a 111 which is still my favorite. After that I got a 292K.

I'm honesty getting a little sick of Pam's though. I love my 111 but I'm thinking of getting something different next time and will probably sell my 292 in the near future.

Every time you change the strap it feels like a new watch, that's why I like mine.

Thanks for all the information - I read this thread with glee - I have been a member on the forum for sometime and got away from the hobby over the last few years; however, the BUG has me again.

When I joined the forum in 09' everyone was PAM crazy - I first became aware of the brand in 03', a friend at work had a 111 he was just crazy about; I didn't find the time piece all that exciting. At that time my only love was complicated time pieces with busy dials.

Not sure if my age or the constant inundation on the forum made me start looking at these again but here I am.

This thread really pushed me over the edge; I read about all the things the members of this forum said about their PAM's and I have been looking at 188's for a few months.

I am kinda weird as I like and desire heavily modified time pieces (base reps just don't do it for me - no offense to anyone); this alone should have pushed me to PAM's sooner as the amount of things you can do and HUGE availability of parts makes this brand a perfect match for my bug.

There is a member selling a very nice heavily modified 188 on the forum with an ETA7753 movement that I just made an offer on; the final thing that pushed me over the edge was this thread.

There seems to be a mystic with every owner and this many like minded people CAN'T be wrong!

Thanks for all the information, I am looking forward to my possible purchase of the PAM 188. Let's see if the magic continues when I put it on my wrist the first time as well.

A few technical reasons:
- No risk of stripped crown threads
- Big crown for winding
- Rock solid movements, potential for DIY first aid fixes
- Lug screws, on bigger watches I don’t thrust spring bars
(When i wear the PloProf I get stomach aches)
- Heavy duty and non-complicated, therefore almost flawless reps

Besides that: wonderful designs, interesting history, the endless strap change possibilities and big clear numerals filled with strong lume.

Wow, now I am definitely ordering my first PAM.

I finally broke down and bought my 1st PAM rep (029). I was one of the people that just didn't get it. I have a bunch of Breitlings that I love and I never could understand the love for the big PAM's. So now I know...I think the watch is awesome! After 5 days, here is what I found awesome:

1. Easy to read the time on the big non complicated face
2. Different look than all the other brands
3. Changing straps is fun and makes the watch more versatile
4. It is nearly identical to the gen

So if it's said that the 111n takes the first position when ranking PAMs based on a random study, what do PAM experts say would be the SECOND BEST PAM to own and cherish? And of course, we're talking about Reps here.

I'm going to copy here the Section of the Reference PAM REVIEW GUIDE
"Reference PAM REVIEW-GUIDE" - Replica Search, Identification, Evaluation & Selection
related to PANERAI SUCCESS:

THE PANERAI SUCCESS

The distinctive look and limited production – Great collectability
The modern Panerai have hit the nail right on the head when it comes to creating a cult watch with great collectability.
The Panerai watches have very distinctive striking looks, they are produced in relatively small numbers, and every year there are unique editions of truly different watches, not simply a rehash of last year's model with a subtly different dial. For these limited or special editions Paneari produces fewer watches than the market demands. Retailers may only receive a few limited edition pieces each per year and there are long waiting lists for popular models.

The Lume
All Panerai watches due to their original application in military diving activities have very good “Lumeâ€. This feature gives to the Panerai watches a very special attraction among the fans.

LUME-DEFI.jpg

The Panerai Straps
Furthermore, you can change completely the look of your Panerai just changing the strap. Almost all Panerai models accept every type of strap and you can adapt the style of your watch to your taste or to all situations and environments.
There is a huge range and a lot of Strap types for Panerai watches in the market.
Panerai Watches are especially prepared for an easy change of the strap. You can literally change the watch in few minutes. See Section 6- OEM & AFTERMARKET STRAPS FOR PANERAI WATCHES

I've been vaguely aware of Panerais for years, but never paid much attention, as I've always collected 1920's tank watches. That's made me both skeptical of the merits of luxury watches, and somewhat antithetical to both big modern watches and the common aversion to the small watches I prefer. So, I always wrote Panerais off as another overpriced modern monster watch. Just last week I noticed an extremely pricey 1930's Panerai 3646 for sale and it prompted me to learn more about them. Suffice it to say, the bug has bitten me. I've always been fond of the Rolex Oyster cushions, and realizing what the early Panerias were, I decided I had to have one. And while if I really, really wanted to, I could swing a modern Panerai, I have no interest, and the 1930's ones are way more expensive than I could/would ever spend on a watch. So a replica makes the most sense, as it's closer to an original 3646 than anything Panerai makes, and at less than a 20th of the price. I ordered a 3646 sterile dial, Kampschwimmer style, from River and can't wait to get it.
I have to say, I'm a little concerned about the size. As a guy who can't wear sunglasses because they seem like too much of an ostentatious affectation, a 47mm watch may be too showy for my liking, but I'm hoping I can pull it off comfortably. It's vintage roots really make me want to like it. Fingers crossed.

I first asked what's the deal with Pams, and then I ended up getting two of them.

I then asked, what's the deal with B&R's, and then I ended up getting two of those.

Don't ask "What's the deal with so and so watch" othewise you'll end up with them on your wrist.

Btw, what's the deal with ... ... ... aw sht, nevrmind.....

AHAHA I was exactly like this!

I can weigh in now..

Well, I can weigh in now. I have just received my first ever PAM and it is the best FEELING watch I have ever worn. (Of course this may change as my collection gets bigger)

Never really wore watches, but the allure of luxury watches has always been there, especially pams. For some reason, I've never thought about reps until recently, so I stumbled upon this site and dug around. Just pulled the trigger on my first rep, the 111 v3.
Already have a new strap in mind, can't. freaking. wait.
