What's the big deal about Panerai? Why do people like them?

I don't remember what hooked me, but oh well . . . you know your hooked when you never wear your gen rolexes because of your rep pams lol. They are bold, simple, beautiful, and versatile with the straps. I don't get asked if it's real of course, lol, but people often think it's a new "Fossil" watch. Boy, I'd be really ticked if it where a gen lol.

I was looking at a gen PO for my 40th. I couln't justify the price so went looking for a used one on the bay.

There was this one particular guy who said he was selling in order to get himself a Panerai. Panerai??? What the hell is a Panerai?

So I went searching the Pam brand.......urghhh! What the hell is this guy thinking, chopping in his gorgeous Omega for such an ugly watch.

Then I came here, saw the light and Panerai is now my favourite brand and the one that adorns my wrist more than any other. So simple, yet so damned sexy.

Go to...

http://www.paneraisource.com

...to choose your model, then get with the trusted dealers
here on the board.

Cheers....

You made my day man!

I always ignored the PAM's as they were huge watches; but today with this website, I gotta know that they are also available in 40mm version which would be perfect for my puny wrists.

Thought i am still struggling with buying my first watch hope that i can get one at a good price

For me the Radiomir PAM 210 or 55 is the Panerai to go for. I just love the simple clear style ,its just the best!
The GMT and Chronos are overloaded, and I think there are better looking chronographs out there then the one from panerai.
The Ferrari edition has an appealing color style and layout, but I don't think I'm ever going to own one of those. The Ferrari Logo and Sign is shouting too much for me...

I'm new to the rep scene, and wasn't seeing why everyone likes the pam's so much. I'm in the UAE right now, and went watch shopping at the dubai mall yesterday. I hit all the stores, and tried on the breitling chrono b01, evo, navitimer, bentley 6.75, a couple different omega seamasters, tag carrera and grand carrera, Hublot tourbillion, a couple Bvlgari's, IWC's, a Vaceron, a couple UN's, aPatek Phillipe, a few Mount Blanc's, and a Bell and Ross.

Lastly, I hit the Panerai store. I put the first one on my wrist and my heart lept. It was at that moment I realized what all the hype is about. It looked and felt absolutely amazing. It was really difficult to not say right then "I'll take it". I had the worst internal battle, but luckily my girlfriend was there to help me not spend the price of a good used car on that watch. Since I can't really justify the cost of a gen, so I'll be trying to find a great rep of either an 111 or 212 1950 flyback (probably from WBK unless someone has a better suggestion).

Seems most people choose a 111 as their first Pam.
I couldn't see their appeal either, so when I had a chance to get a 111h cheaply I decided to try it out. Just as you discovered, that's all it takes isn't it? After the 111h I bought a 341 Egi and just got my 088 from pcsam.

Welcome to the fold, brother!

my ex doesn't like the look of Breitlings, nor Rolexs, nor most anything else I wear,
but when she sees me wearing a Pam... non-stop compliments, lol.

there's just something about them.

The most simple movements, cases and dials and after some simple mods you can ask high prices I think that must be the fun.

Just check out the dealer section :)

I never "got" people "not getting" Panerai. It was love at first sight for me. I purchased my gen PAM50 two months after being introduced to the brand (and after joining and mingling in the 'risti boards). I've since purchased and sold several other gen pieces including a 210 that I absolutely regret selling.

I happened upon this board just recently to learn more about reps. The fever is back on! I've been soaking up post after post about experiences, mods, trusted sellers, etc, and I'm excited to find a nice 232 rep after all the reading.

For me, the allure of Panerai comes from simplicity, beauty and back story. I even purchased a couple Panerai of books, "Legendary Watches" and "Panerai Historia", as well as a catalog from 2001 that I still flip through from time to time.

My current collection consists of a gen Omega SMP, gen Rolex Explorer II, Oris Miles Davis Chrono Tonneau, Bathys 100 Fathoms (current wrist fave), Luminox diver (Yachtmaster clone), a myriad of plastic sport watches and a Casio calculator watch. After discovering reps, I'll be adding a few more Panerai back into the fold. =)

I came looking for a tag heuer link day/date with champagne dial. looking on all the scammers sites but never bit.
saw pams and thought they were ugly whats that huge blob on the side of the watch and why are the numbers so big it looks like an old nearly blind mans watch errr horrid.

Then kept on seeing them over and over again, starting reading about them found there history fascinating, decided to get a cheap one from t4d prestigewatchco on rg. i was hooked although its still my only pam rep and is in need of a new crown, crystal and case lol

Im currently looking for my next pam after my gf got me 2 panerai books for xmas the history has me totally sold on panerai.

You're listed some impressive watches there. That Oris is sweet!

Ordering my first, sooooo hard!! I want 32!! I was watching Dead Man Running, and the lead is wearing one. You can't really see it for probably at least half the movie, but somehow I intuitively knew it was one. I can't wait, I'm hooked already!

My favourite features of the Panerais are the super glowing lume, uncluttered look and strap options. Few watches beat the lume of a Panerai without looking cheesy. Unlike some other brands there is a strong family resemblance between all the models. It is easy to identify a Panerai because they all have key features to the Luminor or Radiomir lines. There is a Panerai model to suit every taste.

But, when I was out shopping for my first gen I went with Rolex. Panerai is asking too much, I feel, for their watches. They lack the sophistication of the Rollies and for what you get from Panerai a Rollie seems good value! Crazy, right!

However the new 382 changes my mind. That PAM suits me just fine. I have never had a 47mm tho. I think its a bit big. But yes, people like them because their extensive model lineup has something to please everyone.

1)clean simple face on most models that are not "busy" and are easy to read at a glance

2)everybody on the street in my city knows "rolex" and where i live not so nice folks will jack you just as quickly for a gen rolex as a rep rolex.....they dont know panerai and even though a larger watch than most panerais are not blingy enough to catch the eye of goblins and gremlins

3) there are a multitude of after market straps available from oem to custom to mass produced replacements....

4) very few people wear panerais when compared to other "luxury" brands....why wear what every other guy is sporting on his wrist
