What's the big deal about Panerai? Why do people like them?

I like the Panerai style very much. Having skinny arms, they look a bit large, but the dial is so visible, and the elegant, simple design is easy to see. A watch is a clock for your wrist, and with a menagerie of complications on some watches, a person could forget time and wonder what he is looking at. On the other side of the coin, watches with complications are mechanical marvels, and deserve their place in the watch box!

Having only recently joined and ordered my first rep from Lay, I must admit that I'd
a) Never heard of a PAM
b) Understood what the fuss was about

Having been exposed to you guys my thoughts are now IWC Pilot for suit, PO for daily and a PAM? well... just because. Curse you, scrawny 6.5 inch wrist.

I used to love Rolex but when i saw them as common as Casio, my interest soon lost :(
But than came Panerai.... the unique design, the size and the best thing i like the most is the rareness.

Simplicity, clarity, ruggedness. That's what got me in.

I'd never heard of Panerai until I found this forum. Now I am completely hooked. Understated, luxurious, simple and effective. Why over-complicate a timepiece with so much detail when all we really need them for is to tell the time and to make us look good. I just hope that when I finally decide which one to get it will suit my skinny wrist!

Its a "banker's watch" in Shenton way Singapore. Quite common in SG. You see alot of them wearing Pammys and taking the train to work... So.. I stopped wearing them lol..

Panerai is different things to different people. For some, it is the bold Italian styling, for others, it is the history surrounding the exploits of the Italian incursore during WWII. It could be just the sheer size of the things (47mm is way bigger than any Rolex), or the fact that only 300,000 or so Panerais have ever been made. Pretty rare when you compare to the 2M plus Rolexes that come off the production line each year.

For me, the first Pam I saw was a Black Seal Rad owned by a fellow B&R owner. I had to have it and I still own the 183 today. Lately, I have been getting more and more into the vintage side of things, and tritium dials and the rareness of certain models.

Either way, it's a love affair that I don't ever see ending for me any time soon!

I'd never heard of Panerai before joining the forums late last year. And at first initially being a brand queen I thought nothing of them. I was after a Rolex Milgauss Pro-Hunter.

I read a bit, looked a bit, read a bit more and my first purchase was a 111.

I sold a Tag Monaco I was bought by a friend in the far east and then used the money to get my father in law a Radiomir, should arrive soon, he's dead excited and he too had never heard of Panerai but is mesmerised by the movement on my 111.

I genuinely believe the movement has some sort of hypnotic powers and once you catch a glimpse of it your hooked.

My heart is set on a 292M (thanks Del, your fault - damn pictures you keep posting) problem is the wallets empty at the moment. Hey on the bright side only 9 months till Christmas lol.

Anyway my view is everyone should have at least one in their collection.

If I ever win the lottery there's a few gen people on RWG that will get one in the post.

I opt for my fake panerai watch as there is just something special about these watches, and you wont know what it is until you own one!

I so agree with this statement! When I started getting into the rep market, I hadn't even heard of most of the luxury makers 30 days ago (What? me a Noob?). It started with "yeah...I need an upgrade from my 15 yr old old Swiss Army. How about a Rolex or Omega clone? I'll look em up on the net!" Jeez, what was I thinking? After the initial research, I figured experience is never free and never cheap, so buy some and find out first hand (so to speak). After getting a Nfactory Rolex GMT and a B&R 02 from Joshua @ Perfect clones...then an Omega GMT and PAM00086 from Silix. IMO, while all of these are great watches in their own way, the Panerai style & proportion has become the de facto leader while you can extend the design with the strap selection generating more interest. This appeal has probably something to do with the age group demographics as my statistician wife likes to say. Probably so, I just like them over everything else I have or seen so far. With that said...looking to buy a PAM 359 and a SS bracelet, a 389 and a 441 . The stencil dial in the various case finishes has got my attention. My co-worker who has just over 200 various watches in his collection says I got the bug...oh crap!

This is an very interesting thread.

I'm an watch collector since 25 years. Started old days in the swatch hype, then went to expensive luxury Gens. Today I own about 15 Gens (Rolex, IWC, Audemars, Breitling, Omega) and since about 1 year I got crazy with the Reps.

The Panerai never ever touched me until I got a 243. From that moment on I tried the 288, then the 111...... and so on. Today I own 7 Panerai reps and have 3 more on order. It's crazy. Somehow one watch looks like the other but still - you do this for yourself and you for sure now all the details which are small but different.

So its more than a hype, its an addiction! Keep on collection guys!!!

A few technical reasons:
- No risk of stripped crown threads
- Big crown for winding
- Rock solid movements, potential for DIY first aid fixes
- Lug screws, on bigger watches I don’t thrust spring bars
(When i wear the PloProf I get stomach aches)
- Heavy duty and non-complicated, therefore almost flawless reps

Besides that: wonderful designs, interesting history, the endless strap change possibilities and big clear numerals filled with strong lume.
