Not sure if anyone else is doing it, but poly watch is excellent for smoothing up the case-back threads. I dropped some on the threads and turn the case-back in and out with a plastic ball for a bit after giving the acrylic crystal a going over...nice final polish to the case as well using the cloth used for the crystal...waste not want not.

Excellent idea. Similar to a very very fine lapping compound. (y)

Come on lads. Threads gone quiet for a couple of days.
Where's the work? I know a couple of you at least are in the carving stage - let's see the results.
I'm ordering a new Raffles 1016 case as I'm not happy with what I've done with this one.
There's so much expertise from the old boys here - there's no criticism, just good sound advice and friendly guidance.
This is the top thread for 1016 reps out there in the whole Sea Of The Internet.
Show us the story so far,
Here's mine:
You can see I over-carved it. Too much Dremel initially and spent to much material trying to get a black polish finish without gauges.

regardless it looks good @316lad
among the gen 1016 out there, I am sure that there are a lot that look just like that 😁

I admit I have been procrastinating on my 1016. I do the work outside on a balcony, and it's been raining/cold like crazy in FR.

Plus I have been distracted by my 5513 that had a loose cannon pinion, on a brand new Seagull movement SMH 😭
BUT on the positive, I learned how to crimp an ETA CP, remove all calendar works, clean the hand wheels and CP and oil. I even put a 2 position setting jumper. 😁

I will have a bit more free time in the next few weeks I hope. So I will get on with it.

Waiting for parts for multiple projects…the calm before the storm, lol.

Going through the watch box and I think its time to cull the herd a bit ... Anyone interested in an Albino or Tropical explorer?
I plan on listing them in the classifieds this evening so I thought I would give the 369 Explorer mafia first dibs if anyone is interested

Alright everyone. Well done. It's all in work in progress. And it's good work.
Karbon - excellent work going deeper in to Movements and figuring stuff out - well done on crimping a CP - that's make or break stuff so if you fixed that's brilliant. Last time I tried that I collapsed the damn thing under the jaws of a tiny pair of pliers to try and fix. Basically folded it in half. Always have to remind myself how little pressure is required for these delicate operations.
369mafia - that looks good and just like mine! I seem to have an obsession with polishing the Xtel at the moemnt though.
dpd - waiting is the hardest part - for that package to drop in to the letter box. Good Luck on the forthcoming build I'm sure it'll be brill.

Ah the cannon pinion slippy hands.. no fun. I have had to repair once and I first tried nail clippers (as that was what I read online somewhere) and it worked pretty well, that or a small pair of needle nose pliers does the trick as well.

Nice job digging into the movements its a daunting task but once you get over the fear of messing things up it gets easier

Yes I believe it was your first choice.

Fair enough, or perhaps I can make you an offer in your "relaxed state" for the watch that you cant refuse ??
Gotta strike when the iron is hot :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Just saw your listings. Those are going to fly 😍

about the ghost date removal. I put in a ready made part. I bought 5 of them to plan ahead.
Now I have read somewhere that it's possible to modify the 3 position jumper. Have you done that? If yes, I'd appreciate a pic of the part.

I managed to - there is still a slight feeling of position 2 but as you pull the crown you feel it only as you shoot through it to position 3. Likewise when you push the crown in. It's there but very difficult to stop on it.
I did eventually order a two-position just to complete the watch.

i was guessing as much. Looking at the stock 2 position, i could not figure out how to file it. looks like there is metal added rather than removed

You can still see Position 2 but it worked quite well. The problem was to get rid of it fully meant too much material coming off and probably snapping it. Wanted to give it a try as it was a challenge. The 2801 replacement is by far the better option.

A catch up for those looking to use the aliexpress explorer case. I fitted a bracelet to the case today and ran into a slight snag, being that the raffles gmt (I like the flip lock clasp) end links are too large for the aliexpress case. For some odd reason I had a set of after market 555b end links that fit well...with about four hours of file and fit (but no bending).

The 2 mm springbars are just 1.16 mm on the pivots so I had gone with 1.2 mm holes...an absolute pain in the arse to line up and get squared away.

But worth it as there is absolutely no movement in the end links or springbars.

The ebay flap sanding wheels I referenced in my earlier post were excellent for fitting the endlinks and kept a constant curve on the surfaces I removed metal from.

I am going for old and well used.
