Lume patina aging- My 2 cents. This method is for dials that have lume already, that aren't the tone desired. After doing a few dials over the years, I ended up settling on watercolor paint. I make furniture, etc. for a living. Metal/wood, etc. Also make paintings/scupture and surfboards for fun. I generally use titebond green glue (labeled as waterproof when cured) on my wood projects. Experimented with watercolor pigments wetted out with titebond glue. I squeeze a little dollop of glue into the lid of a jar, or some small mixing container, and thin it out so it's almost as thin as the water alone. Then mix thinned glue with the pigment or pigments, and voila, a tinted pigment with a bonding agent mixed to whatever tones you desire. I've found that the binder in the thinned out glue does a great job adhering to the lume instead of some coffee or whatever just sitting on top after it dries out. It does slightly dim the luminosity but with the crap lume that generally comes on rep dials, it's not that big of a deal. I wish I could get my mitts on some real super luminova or whatever Seiko uses.

That said, The mixture does want to skin up as it dries so you have to be aware of over working it with a tiny brush. An upside is that if the tones don't come out well, I've been able to sort of peel off the applied color with a lightly wetted brush if the lume isnt too textured or porous. I'm sure others have found methods that work best for them and hope to expand my skillset from members here. As I'm digging through this thread and forum again, I'm astonished at the level of skills shown here. Wow

Had a real nightmare with this, maybe it was beginners luck with the 1st build but this seemed to fight me every step of the way.

Lots of issues mounting the dial and hands, you can see on the dial how chipped it is as a result really disappointed with this, it’s a Mochacha dial which I was really pleased with when it arrived (2nd hand) , just my own inexperience to blame, you will also notice some of the lume missing i tried to remove a light stain on the dial with deionised water which removed the lume almost instantly,

I also had to use an odd minute hand, the minute hand I lumed for some reason was too large for the movement, at this point with the damaged dial I looked at the build as a learning exercise rather than a finished item so just used what I had to get the watch back together and see if the components would work together

I do feel like it has taught me a lot which is always valuable

On the brighter side I’m really pleased with how the case, bezel and crystal turned out, my previous case was relatively expensive so I was hesitant to do much to it but with this $50 case I was really able to get stuck in, I had selected my end links prior to shaping so used them as a constant ref throughout to match the case to.

I was unsure about lowering the rehaut in case it caused fitment issues but it went to together fine and I’m really pleased with the look it has given the watch.

I do have a thin Raffles crown on the way but after that not sure what to do next,

my initial thought was to re lume another set of hands and try a Ruby dial however after researching cases so much I’m wondering about trying one of the Vietnam cases

@HSV726

First off nice job on the build I think it looks legit.

I have had similar experience with mochacha, ruby and MQ dials paint that easily chips and lume that flakes off too easily.
They may be more accurate in appurtenance and details to gen parts but the quality and finish are something to be desired.
where as the raffles dials are nearly bulletproof in comparison.

I think that's a nice looking dial and looks great as a complete watch and the missing lume doesn't bug me , but if you do wish to fix it I suggest you send it to someone who is an expert on lume so they can match the lume paste to the existing and repair the missing plots.

otherwise wear the watch and enjoy it. it looks great nicely done!

Regarding Lume…since we’re replicating 30-60 year old watches…wouldn’t the lume on a gen be pretty much dead anyway? My gens from the ‘50s and ‘60s pretty much only glow for a few minutes when the lights go out, if that. Some barely glow at all.

Many thanks for the feedback really appreciate it, good to know your thoughts on the dials makes me feel a little better although I’m now a little anxious about future projects 😅

You can’t really see in the pics but there is quite a bit of paint missing around the centre hole where the hour hand touched, it was very light however so I was surprised to see the paint lifted so easily.

On lume in general I’m not particular interested in luminosity but rather the texture the applied lume gives to the dial, this is my first dial to have this it’s hard to photo but it gives a whole extra dimension to the watch,

Nice crystal 🙂, is it the handset you had from raffle time?
Sad for the dial, I have a Viet dial and it look fragile in the same way, the whole watch look cool anyway, nice one

Here a 7836 I reworked, found some pictures of some nice exemplar worked in the same way, gave a try and very pleased with the result, It corrected the shiny sharp aspect of the bracelet out of the factory...

They are very nice quality for the money. As someone who has owned a MQ viet 6350 dial compared to this one, the quailty is much better and the dial finish and lume is far more durable than the MQ dial. the viet dial was hundreds of dollars, where this one is 50 awesome bang for the buck.

I have aged one slightly , which is a requirement for a 70 year old ref. ITs difficult to want to age such a nice dial but otherwise it looks like a homage microbrand

This thing is fantastic. I've seen these hands for sale in the past but can't seem to find them now. This question may have been answered before and I can't seem to find it yet but would you share where you sourced them? I need to start a dedicated reference notebook for this 1016 thread. Again, amazing work here and all over this site.

The hour and second hands are from Raffles Time originally, the minute hand I’m not entirely sure, it was just in one of the sets I had to hand, I may be mistaken but if looks to be slightly longer than a ‘standard’ sub hand, it is also slightly curved (I dismissed the long HR hand as it was flat) which was something I really wanted, I think it might have been from an eBay seller, I’ve ordered another set to see if that is correct, I’ll update with any developments

Ok, this is very interesting. I’d be interested in getting one.
Are they still available? And how does one resize them?
Thanks

ThanksI

In order to resize them you need to bend the center link open to remove links, and bend it back like a gen rivet s

Just wanted to share my build. Parts are as follows:

Gen 16013 case.
JMB Bezel
Gen Crown
Ebay dial I bought years ago
Vh31 Quartz movement
Clarks Crystal

I had this built for years with an ETA 2824 movement. I wanted to try something different. for those that don't know the Seiko Vh31 is a sweeping quartz movement. I made a quick video to show it here:
