I did wonder that unfortunately there isn’t a huge amount of material to work with, the large thread runs very close and I was concerned about the tools integrity, that said having the teeth perched up high is not ideal either.

I tried some different screws and can confirm M4 is the correct thread, unfortunately the smallest length I could get was 16mm which is too long going to order some shorter ones and go from there

I'm finally on my way - here's my build list:

  • Case/crystal: Ruby, late 80's serial
  • Crown/tube: Gen from eBay
  • Stem: eBay
  • Bracelet: Italian Jubilee
  • Dial: Mochacha mk 5 matte
  • Hands: eBay (VintageWatchMods)
  • Movement: Gen 1570
So far I've ordered the dial and bracelet. Once the dial arrives I'm going to order a handset to best match the dial lume, since the seller offers a few different shades. Then it'll be case and finally movement.

Anything I'm overlooking? I believe I'll have to order caseback gaskets separately but unsure about anything else.

Sorry in advance for the novice questions but...

I've been reading through this thread for awhile and am considering trying a 1016 build.
It seems like most people start with the Raffles vintage 36mm case, change the acrylic to a Clark T21 or T22, and the bezel to a WSO one from ebay.

Does the T21/T22 crystals make a big difference compared to the stock Raffles acrylic?

Also, is the only thing holding the crystal to this case the bezel? There isn't any internal crystal gasket between the crystal and the case?
From some of the posts, it seems like you can technically fit any acrylic outer diameter to this case simply by matching the bezel's internal diameter via sanding.

Thank you!

I think you are pretty much set up. You are probably aware that this will be quite the expensive build but componet wise everything is there.

The T21 looks more like the vintage original crystals, the T22 has the original dimensions but looks like a service crystal. The raffles one looks close to a t22 from its general shape but is a little bit smaller. If you want to change the crystal i would advice taking the raffles case with the saphire because the raffles with acrylic seems to be glued and chances of destroying the crystal through bezel removal is quite high.

Yes like in the original the crystal is only held by the bezel

Technically you can sand down a WSO, Raffles or any other bezel to fit any crystal. Keep in mind that you would have to widen the inner diameter by .5mm for a T22 which can be harder than you think if you want to do it as round as possible to ensure at least a little bit of water resistance.

But a lot of people hiere in this forum have done that already and it seems to work pretty well :)

Thank you for the help!

By the looks of the Raffles cases, it also seems like the lugs need heavy reshaping to get it closer to gen 1016 cases. I’ve seen a couple of posts about people doing it, but seems tricky to get all the lugs equal.

I wonder if anyone has put in a word to Raffles to talk with the factory in redesigning a more gen-spec case for the 1016

This caseset is miles above what was previously offered. Having the drilled lugs is a huge bonus. Having a bit of extra meat on the lugs allows for some shaping and still able to retain some NOS look case sizes.

Even the Viet Case sets are a bit THICC and need shaping to achieve a vintage worn appearance

From what I’ve read since joining this forum, seems like the previous “explorer” cases offered by raffles needed a lot of reshaping and mods whereas the current sapphire and acrylic versions are wayyyy better and more “acceptable” to start 1016 build.

Now that raffles has started offering a 1016 engraved caseback, next step would be to have engravings between the lugs OOTB for lazy folks like me without access to proper tools and having access to butter fingers

Out of curiosity, I asked Rafflesdials if they had any plans to update the 1016 case. They said they don’t have a gen 1016 to model after, so cannot.

However, they said they can disassemble their current 1016 cases prior to shipping for anyone who plans to modify the case shape themselves.

So for those interested, you can save some trouble from separating the glued-on acrylic crystal/bezel. Or even the sapphire version, if you don’t have a bezel removing tool.

I’m gonna start picking up parts and getting this project ready

Another quick question.

For those aging the lume on Rafflesdials, are you baking the dials on coffee?

I tried applying liquid coffee (both drip and espresso) on Raffles lume previously, but it didn't take at all, even after few hours.
Baking on coffee grounds did the trick, but it also doesn't have working lume anymore.

Are there any ways to slightly yellow the lume, but keep the lume working and also have minimal aging on the dial itself?
Thanks

would like to see how your dial turned out

baking kills lume I use a deluted water based air brush paint to match the dial to hands on builds

It’s not a 1016;; sorry.
I tried coffee liquid, didn’t do anything. Tried bleach, didn’t do anything.
I then tried leather dye, which browned it significantly, but the solvent in the dye also made the whole dial gunky looking.

I finally baked it outside on a frying pan (i don’t have an oven) on coffee grounds for 15 minutes.
It aged it, but lume doesn’t work anymore.

Btw, do gen vintage 1016 still have working lume?
