The 1016: The Under Appreciated Thread

I’m no expert but in my personal opinion the rehaut is too tall on the raffles case, it’s a minor detail but I think it really makes a big difference

I sanded mine to reduce the height, easy enough to do just need a flat surface and some wet and dry paper.

I used a 1016l’s bezels and a t21 crystal which worked well.

Place the wet and dry paper onto the flat surface then place the rehaut face down on the paper and made an equal number north, south, east, west passes until I reached the desired height.

Did it a while ago so can’t recall the exact grade think it was 400 with a few higher grades at the end just to give it a finish (I did post about it in this thread with some pics but it’s so big now I wouldn’t know where to start, best bet would be to search)

Just re read my post there hope that didn’t come across as a negative about Raffles, Ken’s products are great and he is a pleasure to deal with it’s just for these 1016 builds the case needs a bit of shaping which is the same for most if not all cases

Raffles is fantastic for the money and the communication is top notch. He even brings up potential issues with parts you may order and suggests others.

Thanks for the reply.
So is there still a problem with actual rehaut?
I wanted to know if there is a problem with the depth of the rehaut.

Thanks for the advice regarding the bezel as well.
I have plans to build another 1016built, so I will consult 1016lover about the bezel at that time.
So, yes, the Raffles 1016 case Rehaut is too high. Obviosly, with a lathe you can just take it down - I forget the Dims but carve off about .2 maybe .3 of a MM and you're getting close. Also the Raffles Rehaut is not polished enough so while you're ther give it some 2500 grit and some sloppy Autosol on a rag.

I, too, would like to give Ken at Raffles a round of applause - he's a lovely guy and he's doing his best with this stuff. He actually reads this Thread and adjusts operations over there based on our feedback to dial in as close as poosible to what we ask.

Has it occurred to anyone else that as we approach 6,000 posts in this thread, maybe "underappreciated" was a bit of an understatement?

;)

I would even argue that this thread would not be as prolific if the Raffles parts were gen perfect 🤣
They would be cookie cutter builds swamping the forum

Yes, absolutely that Brother.
Ken helps give this Thread meaning.
We have to create.
We're given the base units - and then we have to get to work. That is the main vitality of this Thread. It's why i love it.

x2 Us old timers can remember a time when we had to outsource our cases to JMB to drill thru lug holes because the parts were not available. Its great that Ken keeps an eye and ear on the community and does his best to give us what we want and ask for. and the odd surprise like that albino commando dial!! After all this hobby is called watch making...not watch assembly. adding the details and patina etc is what gives these builds the character and individuality. Especially with the addition of patina I consider it more in the realm of functional art ..

I still have a hard time referring myself as a « watchmaker » 😅

I will authorize myself to bear that label the day I will be able to service a movement
That's not a ticket to call yourself a watchmaker.
The day you carve a dial out of a Brass blank, design and make a case for your creation - then you make the Base Plate, the Wheels and the Bridges and Cocks, set a pair of Pallet Jewels on a perfectly formed fork - swinging in harmony between the Impulse Jewel - and the whole thing tells the time with reassuring accuracy - then, and only then, may you call yourself a Watchmaker.
I've been doing this years - and I'm no where near there yet.
In fact - sometimes it sems I'm getting further and further away from it.
Oh well, Progress not Perfection.

I barely understood any of that but sounds extremely complex and imagine it takes a lifetime of practice to perfect these skills.

I would call myself a watch tinkerer :ROFLMAO:

Thanks for all the advice on the NH35 movement, one issue that I'm finding now is that the raffles second hand doesnt fit on the pin correctly and is loose?

did u get the hands for the NH movement?
the ETA minute and hour hands fit the NH movement but the seconds require crimping.
either u bought the wrong set or raffles sent u the wrong set.

Ahh this must have been it, I ordered for the eta movement initially, would I crimp it slightly before putting it on the NH?
