I asked AI what it thought about building historical reps as a hobby… this is what it had to say:

“Building accurate replicas of historically significant watches as a hobby can be seen as a creative and educational pursuit. It allows enthusiasts to appreciate horological craftsmanship and history without the financial burden of original pieces. However, ethical considerations arise when replicas are sold as originals, potentially misleading buyers. As long as these replicas are clearly identified and not misrepresented, they can serve as valuable learning tools for understanding design and mechanics in watchmaking. This hobby fosters a deeper appreciation for the art of horology while respecting the integrity of original timepieces.”

Re post #5495

... that Explorer II:
- Service case
- Service bezel
- Service hands
- Service dial
- Service/newer bracelet
Maybe the crown, caseback, and movement are original?

The receipt tells the story.
Date of repairs...09-07-2015 Nine years ago.
Cost...7661.13 Singapore Dollars/SGD.
The total cost of 7661.13 Singapore Dollars was around $4332 USD in September 2015 going by the September 2015 SGD to USD exchange rates. $4332 USD in 2015 is about $5587 USD today.
A new case back was included.
New crowns and case tubes are included with new cases.
The movement was original to the case it was presented in or it would/should (??) have been rejected for service.

No telling how much this same service with case, dial, bracelet etc. would cost today, or even if Rlx will still do it.
One thing for sure...it would cost a fortune.
To many/most hard core 'Rlx Collectors'...a watch with a '44' prefix case is considered to be an Officially Certified Fake.

I'm wondering if it wasn't badly fire damaged perhaps? I can't think of much else that would require a completely new case.

Maybe a bad accident caused one of the lugs to be broken off?

That's a good question. There would need to be a lot wrong with a watch to end up using only the movement...or some of it. The 534.43 charge for 'other components' might have been mostly movement parts and if so, there was not much of a watch to start with.
A mystery for sure.

The word "Matte" in the timeline is missing the "e". Space-dweller has a hyphen.

It might be worth noting that the 6098 pre-Explorer shown was Hillary's watch, but certainly not an error.
FWIW, I'm reading that Hillary probably used a Smith's DeLuxe watch, while the Sherpa Norgay wore the Explorer. Smith's are some interesting watches, and dirt cheap on Ebay. I picked up a couple for less than $50 each in "well vintaged, but running" condition.

Yes, that's my understanding as well. The 6098 pictured is Hillary's watch, but note I didn't say it was the watch he wore to the summit of Everest. ;)

In the past I looked at picking up the same model Smith's that Hillary wore, but they were priced a bit high for my liking. Don't really want to look now, as that was in "the before times" LOL.

Well done Brethren Of The 1016.
Good knowledge being demonstrated here.

Nice. (y)

Yes, they tend to sell very cheap, except the specific model he wore (the reference number escapes me), which carries a hefty premium.

The couple I bought are close enough to his that I'm ok with it...like wearing a later reference "Paul Newman" or a non-moon Speedmaster Pro.

I gotta find some photos now, lol.

This is Hillary's watch...allegedly the one he wore to the Summit:

These are the ones I picked up, cheap, on the 'Bay:

They're beaters, for sure, but they run well and appeal to the part of me that likes vintage and unusual.

Using the old dial - with dial feet removed, holes drilled through their positions- overlaid on the new dial and marked through. I've purposefully mis-aligned the two dials so you can see the new one beneath the old for the pic.
Failing that (if no old dial exists for the movement) by placement of the actual movement itself - it is a convention of watch movement design/ manufacturing that the dial feet holes go all the way through the main plate - allowing you to align the dial and mark the feet position.
