plot thickens. On the topic of 34mm
from a few pages back, I shared this pic:
THis was posted in a watch group on FB I asked the owner if the dial had been refinished.
He claimed he did not know but he did tell us that it was a 34mm , which would confirm 100% refinished because there was never any SCOC text on a 5500 explorer .
Someone called him out and said it was a fake.
he replied by calling them a fake enthusiast.
end of my exciting fb story drama lol
Interesting. With older watches, there's really no telling what's been done to them over the years. Maybe a spare 1570 bridge was used to replace a broken 1520/1530 one at a mom and pop watch repair shop.plot thickens.
The owner of the 5500 scoc just took it to a watch maker and had it opened and it has a 1570 movement.
Has an odd refinished dial with larger numerals , markers and scoc text
1570 movement in a 5500 - never happened.
When I commented on the thread that a 5500 should have a different movement , and since there are a number of details that are questionsable about his dial .
his response:
"so its one of those rare manufactorying error watches that shouldnt exist? Neat"
ME *facepalm* its unlikely.
Hum,plot thickens.

Houston, we have a problem…..only eligible if you build it yourself
Damn, if there's ONE thing I'd like to see in rep, it would be a good 1570. I don't even care if it's a cosmetically altered ETA (or 2813, for that matter). Just something that looks the part, on cursory inspection, with the correct diameter and stem height. A drpp in fit to a gen case, or a big motivator for factories to produce more accurate, gen-spec cases.Hum,
There was a rumour of some fake 1570's last year but that transpired to be all they were - rumours. Nobody's seen one yet. Looks gen to me.
I had that thought also...the 5500 Explorers are somewhat rare and valuable, so a lot of cheaper 5500 and 55XX were "converted" to Explorers with refinished or rep dials. One step removed from that, a lot of 10XX 15XX, etc Oyster cases were converted.Possible that its franken 1500 (date) or a 1002 (no date), no serial on the 1570 mainplate? is there 5500 engrave on the case?
