I think removing the movement is the correct way. The rep bezel wont come out...

As mentioned, removing the movement is the proper way. I just happened to be "lucky" enough for my crystal to fall out, so I didn't bother. :)

I've never worked on a 21J chrono, but here is probably what needs to happen:

Remove bracelet
Remove caseback
Remove stem (likely just needs a little button gently pressed to release)
Remove movement holder (probably plastic which would be easy, screws and clamps are harder)
Carefully remove movement by gentle prying on the side opposite the pushers
Place movement/dial in holder or somewhere safe
Push out the current crystal with fingers (shouldn't be too hard)
Remove the crystal gasket
Measure inner bezel diameter (on mine the insert was slightly smaller than where the crystal sat)
Order the appropriate Sternkreuz HW from Cousins UK
[Right here would be a good time to paint the rehaut black if so inclined]
Place glue in inner bezel (I used GS Hypocement, but the UV activated stuff is better)
Insert plexi carefully so that it is centered and let dry overnight
Reinstall movement, holder, stem, caseback and bracelet in that order
Take pictures and post them immediately in this thread :)

I hope that helps. By the way, LHOOQ just purchased one of the most badass Speedmasters that I've seen. Straight lugs! Maybe we can get him to stick a picture in this Speedy Mega thread. Please...

Well, it does seem like a most appropriate thread. :)

I would apologize, but I doubt you'll mind eating beans for a while! What an incredible watch (and it's just as impressive when face down). :)

I cannot overstate how jealous I am.

Very nice Speedy LHOOQ... Tell us some details about it.

Thanks for the instructions 5. I have the crystal. Need to get some glue. Hope I don't screw this up too badly. I'll probably tackle it in a few days...

Sure! For the past two years, it's been a dream of mine to put together a CK2915-alike using a mix of parts from vintage Speedmasters and the '57 Reissue from 1998 (like Bklynboy's on the first page). The trick would be finding a straight-lug case in the wild, and that's why the project remained a dream. Well, it turned out that someone had had the same idea as me, and acted on it. All I had to do was buy it.

I saw the listing when it first went up. My jaw dropped, but the price was way more than I could afford. The sale was set up as a Dutch auction, but I figured that someone would grab it before it became affordable to me. So I resolved to forget about it. Over a week goes by and 5? PMs me about the same listing. It turned out that not too many people appreciate a good franken outside of our little hobby, and the going price had taken a big tumble. I told 5 that I still couldn't afford it, but I started tracking the auction again. Well, long story short... Here it is.

This watch has a 105.003 case, which was the last of the straight-lugged Speedies (and aka the "Ed White" Speedmaster). Inside is a Cal.321, visible through a sapphire caseback. All the parts in front are from the Reissue.

Note that this is a work-in-progress, and I've got more planned to make it look more authentically '57. Except for the caseback--I like that where it is!

Yeah, it's a great looking build, and interesting from a custom point of view. In the first pic above I though CK2915-2, and that there was something too clean about the dial and hands so thought reissue redial/hands fit. The case is lovely, and the 321 displayback movement is something else. Did you do any refinish on the case? Also the bezel is a newer version? Did someone round it at the edges? It's a lovely build, the straight lugged case makes it, the recent '57 reissue version is lovely also but they should have used a straight lugged version ala wally schirra reissue edition. Wear it well, CK2915 is a bit of an an all time grail here!

Thanks, drbollocko, and good eyes! I agree that the cleanliness of the dial and hands is a tell. It looks too new; most guys will ignore the lugs and shiny retention ring, and assume that it's a '57 Reissue. Well, I'm going to try to get that fixed. The Reissue dial itself is excellent and a pretty good match with the original, unlike the disappointing dial Omega slapped together for the Schirra.

The case looks like it's been polished once or twice in its lifetime, but is otherwise in good shape. The bezel is, as you guessed, a shaved Reissue unit. You've probably seen genuine CK2915s with new bezels on them, and they completely mess with the proportions of the watch. Trimming the outer diameter was a very smart mod. It would be nice if someone would make a bezel with flat A's and correct fonts, but Phong & Co. seem more interested in old Rolexes. Fancy that.

I've said it before, but if Omega had any brains: Reissue face + Schirra case = A Speedmaster they could charge five figures for!

That's a great read. The dial is a bit odd though! In the comments it also mentions the case is slightly different that the standard Professional. I wonder why?

Tough angle to see. What measurement did you get? Looks like less than 40mm which shouldn't be right either.
