Buy a Ka-Bar USMC knife. Not real cheap but worth the price and more. USA made, Marine issue, high carbon steel. You can pay more for knives but you can't buy a better one.

I've got a big thing for knives and if i have to recommend any brands they would be:
USA: Benchmade are my fave for folders, but Bark River or ESEE for fixed blades. (Bark River dont do many black coated blades and are more than 100)
Benchmade CSK2 and Gerber LMF2 is prob right up your street.

Japan is less well known for survival/tactical type knives and are expensive, so cant think of any worthy knives for less than 100

Swiss knives are pretty crap and rare, well i mean average and damned expensive the only one that springs to mind is Klotzli.

My personal knife for heavy work on the farm is an Ontario SP10, big sharp scary bastard but make lightwork of anything.

Ive have a three Ka-Bars and whilst i love the looks and heritage i cant get on with the quality. Maybe i was unlucky but i was dissapointed with the craftmanship on all three and none were delivered sharp out the box.

I highly recommend Emerson Knives. http://www.emersonknives.com/ekTheKnives_Tact.php
I have the CQC-10, CQC-11, SARK, P-SARK and Mini-Commander.
Strider Knives http://www.striderknives.com/site/ are very highly regarded.
I have a Buck Strider 889 and it is solid. This was, as the name indicates, a collaboration between Buck and Strider.

You can get the Buck Strider for under $100. I didn't pay more than $100 for any of my Emersons.
Striders on the other hand are very pricey.

Hope this helps you in your search. Merry Christmas.

I'm a huge knife fanatic, and have been collecting for a long time. My words of advice would be to save a little more and increase your budget. Knives can be great tools, but many make the mistake of buying a cheap one and never get to experience the true magnificence and usefulness of a high quality knife.

at a cheapest budget CRKT makes *alright* quality knives if you are planning on taking it for a couple camping trips to beat it and get a new one.

at the $100-$200 price, benchmades and spyderco's are great knives, with high quality materials.

If you are looking for something exceptional, like abzack said, Emersons and Striders are something else. Incredible build, exceptional material quality, and strength like no other. These knives can be upwards towards $500 for a production and over a grand for a custom one. The customs just have special blade profiles and cooler handle material like Carbon Fiber, etc. But not too much of a difference in use, the productions will withhold the apocalypse.

Just watch this youtube video of a strider with 3v blade steel being put to the test!

:) Feel free to PM me if you have any questions that I didn't answer in this post.

By the way, abzack, you need to get your hands on a real strider, those buck/strider colabs don't compare to the real thing :p Very nice Emerson collection nonetheless!

I have carried this in my pocket for the last ten years.

A Japanese-made Cold Steel "Voyager" with the Tanto blade.

Tough, reliable, best pocket knife ever for me.

I think I paid around $75.00 for it.

Pec,

There are many great steels, and many bad ones, lol.

However, when it comes to the high quality steels, there are certain things you have to keep into consideration, such as what you're going to be using your knife for, and how you will be using it.

There are some steels that are highly corrosion resistant, some that maintain a great edge and don't require sharpening too often, some that are extraordinarily hard (like the 3v above) and some that sharpen well enough to split a single hair into thirds.

How you will be using it plays a great deal in making a decision.

My strider is s30v - great overall steel
my benchmades are 154cm/440c also very nice and pretty common too.
That 3V in the video is extremely hard and handles bashing into cinder blocks, however water is it's worst enemy ;) lol.

wow guys sooo much info ! for the knifes! im just reading and reading !
guys like
fkla makes really good points , and now i understand that maybe ( it is hard to get all of those qualities he mentioned togheter )???
and g,
i need a knife that will be use for :
work: i need something really sharp that wont need sharpening 2 often
i need to cut things that like liquid concret for example , i dont know if u guys know what im talking about , that black stuff that is used to seal . ( it is just an example of things that i need to cut.
if the knife has both blades at the same time , that would be a plus , i dont really know how is it called when i has the 2 kind of blades
IT WILL BE USED TO GO OUT OF THE CITY : so i will use it as a survival knife as well , to cut wood or hard stuff so it needs to be really hard like the one in the video
and if it is good looking knife , that is a plus as well :)
the reason i want a good army , survival knife is becouse it will be used as many things as i can.
an everyday tool , and about if it has to be folder of fixed , it doesnt matter couse i can take it in my poquet or my tool bag
i really apriciate ur help guys , ive been reading all the opinions and tips and checking all the brands u wrote !
decitions!!!!! :(

Think about getting a folder to keep in your pocket and a fixed to keep in your tool bag. Keep in mind that once you start, collecting knives can be as addictive as time pieces... ;)

@fklaceration: Thanks! I haven't bought a new knife in several years, but seeing your Strider has me thinking... Well done, Sir. And apparently, I need to work on my photography skills.

Pec, it's very difficult to find a knife that is equal in all aspects that I mentioned earlier,

in regards to your question about the "two blades" I believe you meant a plain edge and a serrated edge? Similar to the one that Trandy posted? (the teeth are called serrations"

Sounds like you need a very versatile, strong knife. I'd really like to see you get a Strider, they can handle the world when it comes to heavy use and maintenance, I haven't found anything better, but then again I fell in love rather quickly.

Also, despite their quality and popularity, the company is rather small family like operation, and they are very nice guys. I've met the owners Mick and Duane, both very down to earth people.

If anything ever happens to it, although unlikely, you can send it to their address, and they will fix and send right back. You can also send it in for general maintenance anytime. :)

The one I have is the SMF version, it's the largest of the production line, many prefer the SNG which is the slightly smaller version of the folder, and those run a little cheaper between $3-400!

Definitely does, I started into the knife world because I liked manipulating Balisongs, I'd post a video here of what I do with them, but don't want to change the topic, I will think about making a new thread if you like lol.

But believe me, the buck striders only look visually similar to the original striders, when it comes to build, fit, finish, and quality, it's a completely different knife.

Pec, Abzack, or anyone else in California area, if you're interested in attending any of the upcoming knife shows, I'd be glad to send out an invite come the time!

Abzack, your pics are fine, I just snapped mine with my phone, and added some slight photoshopping. haha.

I think there is a couple ZT / Strider collabs, can you post a picture?

I would suggest joining a knife forum and browsing through the sale threads, unless of course you have 1 specific knife you want, I can post a WTB thread on the forums I am on, and do a search for you.

:)

I don't blame you though, I haven't bought one single watch gen/rep yet...all my watches have been +/- 40 price range, and I'm having a VERY hard time trying to decide whether or not I should spend $430 on a Hublot V6 Big Bang, I really love the way it looks, but don't know if it's worth the money.

My point being, I can see where you're coming from, trying to justify spending a good amount of money on a knife, and whether it's really worth it, because I feel the same about that V6 rep lol...been lurking and looking for too long lol.
