DIY GMT Master Crystal Replacement

This is my first post in RWI and I apologize if this isn't the right thread section to post this in, but i've searched other threads and forums and couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for.

Long story short - I purchased a Clean GMT Master II from a TD with a Deep Xtal. The TD could not install the Xtal for me (long story) so we've agreed on the TD shipping the watch out to me along with the Xtal in the same package. I am planning on swapping out the Clean Xtal with the Deep my self.

I've worked on my own watches before as I am DIY handy, but usually end up breaking something the first time around until I get the hang over it/figure things out. I've watched enough videos and read enough threads on RWI to know what parts are what and how to do the job. Basically removing the bezel, making sure I pry slowly to not damage the Hytrel ring (I can use fishing line if it does need to be changed ((thanks @derjenigewelcher for your awesome detailed post & @KJ2020 for the fishline suggestion)), need to remove the crystal gasket and the metal part that the crystal is pushed down by.

I just have a few questions if someone can please answer (without being roasted please):

1. If replacing a Clean xtal with a Deep xtal on a GMT Master, do I have to get a new crystal gasket (meaning a lower or taller one)?
2. Any suggestions for a relatively cheap crystal press with dies? Amazon would be best if someone has any suggestions.

I have messed around a lot with my previous reps but never to the extent of changing crystals to another manufacturer such as Deep. I also plan on polishing the Rehaut while I have the OEM crystal removed and also removing all the grease that usually comes underneath the bezel from Clean.

Again - Sorry for sounding like a noob, but I want to get this right before my trip to Europe as I plan on wearing my watch over there for the next 6 months.

I actually just did this today on my gmt Pepsi. The deep crystal is very worth it in my opinion. The gasket that the watch has is fine. You don’t need a different one. I purchased crystal press from Amazon for around $20. It came with the yellow handle tools that really help.

I appreciate the info. How did you remove the metal part that holds down the crystal (i believe the Crystal Retaining Ring)?

I see a lot of people just use a pear knife or razor blade to slowly pry it up exposing the crystal. I know I can use a press for this part as well.

Take a look at the links below you may find some useful tips.

Sub bezel removal is the same as GMT - just some different parts underneath.

6-digit Sub crystal and bezel swap

6-digit GMT bezel install sequence

Take a close look at some gen pics compared to how your DEEP looks with regard to date mag (before pressing the retaining ring). Stock CLEAN date mag is too large and too bold so using the same crystal gasket may give you the same result. If you're OK with it no problem. If you want to change it check out the links below.

Which crystal gasket should I use?

Just went through all those links and read the entire thread. What i got from your comments is that I should change the Clean crystal gasket with a Clark's gasket since the Clean one isn't bulky enough? I just am worried that I would have to do more work than I would need to/like if I just want to replace the Clean crystal with the Deep xtal (not complaining, but I really don't have a lot of time on my hands as I am leaving to Europe soon and have a lot going on in life atm).

Reading some threads on RWI I remember seeing people complain that the Deep Xtal sits higher than a Gen xtal or even the stock Clean crystal. I do remember reading however that the date window looks better with the Deep xtal compared to a gen vs the clean xtal date window. Which is what I am going for really (also the "deep black depth" effect).

No not necessarily - the CLEAN crystal gaskets are cheap and flimsy compared to gen or better quality aftermarket gaskets. But the main focus of my approach to installing a different crystal is to make sure the date mag is accurate. I greatly dislike looking at a date that is too small or too large.

Once you've decided on a crystal, the gasket height is what determines your date mag. So if you aren't satisfied with it the gasket has to change or be modded. If you change gaskets you will most likely end up with one thicker that the stock CLEAN, which then can affect bezel operation. So is worth it? You have to decide when you see how your date mag looks with a Deep crystal and stock crystal gasket, assuming it's still usable.

If none of this bothers you then go for it. But if you think it might, the time to get it right is the first time around.

I’m about to do a BIG crystal overhaul for my Rolexes. Just ordered 6 crystals from Prof.

I was interested to know if after taking the bezel off I could just remove the movement and press out the crystal and ring from the inside…

I did buy a bezel remover (the 4 blade version) but am prepared to use a hobby blade under the retaining ring and then levering with a caseback knife once I’ve made a gap.

I’ll keep you informed as looks like we’re going the same route just different crystals

From my experience in the past taking off the bezel, i've pulled the crystal out along with the crystal retainer and crystal gasket at the same time. So I assume it's do-able to push it out from the inside. From what I've read, some are just harder to push out than others, and some of them are super easy. Try it out first pushing out with force, and if that doesn't work, try the press.

Where is the best place to buy the Clark's gasket or any higher quality one? I apologize for my ignorance, I'm still learning. I also dont trust a lot of these websites claiming to be selling watch goods, so I want to make sure 100% before purchasing.

What sizes do you recommend I get? I will more than likely order 4-5 different ones and see which one fits/measures closest to the Clean crystal gasket and go up or down from there.

Clark's watch parts are sold on Ebay bro. You can also use Cousin's from UK, both are good quality. I keep 2.3, 2.5, 2.7, 2.85 and 3.0mm on hand for crystal swaps. The three in the middle are most often used. Not a bad idea to have more than one of those. Like $4 each.

Just had a look on cousins and utterly mind melted by all the different types of gaskets :ROFLMAO: I wouldn't know where to begin!

I think Prof supplies gaskets with his rolex crystals but i kind of think it would be good to get some spares

Thanks my man!

Oh whilst I have you... I have a DSSD (noob from BK back in the day) that i'm going to operate on too... Have you ever replaced a crystal on one of these? Wondering if its the same ish procedure as the GMT / Subs. Looked for a tutorial here but anything close all the pics are dead

@KJ2020 - From your experience - Do you typically have to shave the crystal gasket at all when replacing it with a Clean or another factory gasket?

If I buy the Clark crystal gasket and have to shave/sand it down, it's just the inside/outside that has to be touched, right?

Correct on the sanding. You don't want to reduce the height. Sand a little and trial fit. Trial and error is frustrating, but key to making sure it fits properly.

Good question as I just placed an order for a Sea Dweller. I'm holding of until it arrives, but will mostly likely swap the crystal first thing. I spoiled myself when I put a gen crystal on my Bruce Wayne. I think it's the only way to go now...lol.

Is this the correct gasket for the GMT Master II? When searching on Google for "Rolex 25-295 295C and 295C2" as the eBay title says, it doesn't give me a model number for the watch.

Normally you will have to thin a replacement gasket on a CLEAN. You may get the retaining ring back on without thinning but that often results in a stiff or stuck bezel due to the increased bulk inside the retaining ring. As an alternative to thinning the crystal gasket you can just use fishline instead of the stock hytrel ring. This can only work if the bezel rotates freely with nothing inside the bezel groove. Sometimes it won't even do that with a gen or gen-spec wide crystal gasket.

To thin the outside only of a crystal gasket, put the new gasket on a junk crystal. Tape 400 grit sandpaper on a flat bench. Start at the cyclops and with medium pressure swipe/roll about a 30° arc of the gasket across the paper 4 or 5 times. Advance to the next arc overlapping a little. Proceed all the way around. Movement should be out when test fitting - tiny fibers will be present. When finished use a finer grit paper and a new razor blade to clean up tiny stringers. Do not use black sandpaper, it will stain the gasket.

Rub in a coat of silicone grease to restore the finish but wipe away all the excess to near dry. Then clean all the parts including the case in an ultrasound with liquid dish soap or wash by hand. Then reapply a tiny bead of silcone grease to the outside of the gasket only and press the retaining ring down.

I think you should not mess with the Noob DSSD. Someone gave me a beat up Noob V7 years ago to mess around with. I had a bitch of a time getting the bezel off, and as many retaining rings as I've removed I never wanted to mess with this one. It sits on top of the ring lock ledge which is built into the case on Noobs and is super tight. Getting it off may not be too bad but re-pressing it would not be fun I think. You would need a custom metal die to miss the crystal and catch the top edge of the retaining ring.

I put a gen crystal in an SD43 and had to use a vise to get the retaining ring all the way down.

That one will fit the rep 126710, gen or rep crystal. I just gave that link as an example. He also has listings for the same product with different heights. Or message him for which heights and how many you want.
