Hi gang! Does anyone know if you need anything else to install an Athaya 702 crown onto a viet build? Or is it just a simple switch for any watchmaker as long as they have the crown and tube?

That would depend on several things, such as the supplier you purchased the case from, the case reference number etc. Beware of the forum parrots who tell you 'you're good to go bro'.
There is no such thing as a 'Vietnam case'. There are cases from suppliers in Vietnam, which may be more or less accurate to the genuine.
Cases from Kuared Watch for example are frequently not 'gen' spec''. They don't accept gen' spec' tubes, inserts, crystals etc.
Assuming you purchased the case from a reputable supplier and the model reference originally accepted a 702 tube/crown then an Athaya crown/tube will fit that case.

On the same note: has anyone installed an Athaya 702 AM crown on a raffles 5513 case? The original crown for the raffles case seems to be 4+mm thick and Athayas crown is 3.3mm - I’m afraid the crownguards will protrude too much.

My Raffles 5513 went on to a higher class of clientele. He sent me this photo of it on his wrist at a Jack Carr book signing.

My Bivintage case finally came in. In went my crappy gen 5512 dial somebody once attempted to relume. Aged the Raffles hands with Tamiya to closer match the dial. Bleached the insert, torched the pip, tossed on a Raffles rivet bracelet and gave it a good shake in the spare change bag.

Hi,

Looking for input on direction to take with a build and recommendations where to source glossy sub dials.

First on direction to take.
I was looking to do a mid budget sub-build and ended up with the raffles 5513 due to the price and that I liked the sharp chamfers. Due to the case characteristics I opted to do a 14060 opposed to a 5513 resulting in:
-opting for a raffles 14060 29mm dial
-reshaping the lugs to widen the gap and shorten them to make less pointy
-changing tube and crown
-switching plexi for a tropical 19
-gen bracelet
-currently sourcing for a new insert

However, after almost finalizing this build I’m now obsessing over the dial/rehaut appearing too big and I’m now contemplating either switching to a bivintage case or going for the JKF and reworking the case similar to the start of this thread. For those of you who have experience from raffles and other cases is the dial size difference noticeable or am I over obsessing?

Secondly on sourcing glossy dials.
Most/all recommendations found refer to to mate style dials, if switching case I would still want to stick to a glossy dial and preferably a no-date one. Is there a good source that also balances quality/price as I’m looking to not overspend (especially if opting for the bivintage case)

Thanks

For a low budget or mid budget build, I would always use the JKF 5513 vs the Raffles case

You can get decent 5513 dials from Helenarou or Kuared

Changing the insert to a Lobtime is nice too

Thanks for the input, might go for the JKF case then 👍🏻

Talked to Helenarou and they do not carry the glossy white “gold” index dials for the 5513 or 14060. Only the matte version. Looked at Yuki and it’s the same. Haven’t been able to talk to Kuared but looking through the instagram everything seems to be vintage-focused. Still looking for advise on where to source a glossy dial

Just to be sure, the JKF case accepts gen spec dials so 26mm is the size to look for?

26 mm indeed

If I understand correctly, you want the later version of the dial with the « modern » look?

I don’t know.

Else, if you like the 14060, here is my latest build. Apart from the thickness that is +1.2mm, all dimensions are very close to gen and the bezel is also 120 click unidirectional 🤗

Thanks again.

Yes looking for the newer more modern look, seems demand is too low and no one is focusing on them.

Nice, which case did you use for that build?

Yeah also found this listing, crazy postage to the uk but you can select eBay intl’ shipping for $20.

Not sure if anyone’s tried these but they seem to look like a good alternative.

Reading around on more info of the cartel case it seems consensus is that it is too thick. Is this still true and do you happen to know how much thicker cartel is compared to gen?

I purchased that before. It was perfect. I polished as it came “dull”. Came out great.

Would it be possible to go with buffing only the surface?

I will try it when it arrives next week.

Can anybody give me the definitive method for waterproofing the bivintage case? Case gasket and bezel assembly I understand. The crown assembly I’m struggling with.

Too thick is relative
On the wrist invisible

JKF is the best option for budget build
After you need to go Milk case or viet but the built cost will multiply by 2-3

If I’m going to stick with the glossy dial seems I might need to go gen-dial so this is no longer a budget build, these slopes are slippery 😬. Will check with Milk - where does one source viet cases now that rubys is closed?
