Old Forester 1920 is my favorite.
Four Roses small batch select is very good and inexpensive too.
Anyone have Rye suggestions?

Just tried Wolcott for the first time. Made in the Blanton's distillary. Only $5 more than Buffalo Trace but has a smoother profile. I will be back for more.

Whistle Pig and Angel’s Envy are decent ones that are not hard to find.

Rittenhouse straight 100 proof is one of my faves.

if you can get hold of it.
It has a slightly salty taste that's just unique

I agree, also solid choice Talisker without braking the bank account
For blended single malts Monkey Shoulder is smooth (y)

Another vote for Buffalo Trace as a good entry. Eagles Rare if I want to move up with some spice. But do love the smoothness of Blanton's
I remember when I could walk into almost any liquor store and buy Blanton’s off the shelf for under $50. Those days are over. By limiting the supply and hyping the brand price is skyrocketing and almost impossible to get. Sort of like a Rolex Submariner.

Well, i read all 4 pages of this thread with great interest ....while i enjoy the differences and blenda and trying new Whiskeys, the Number One choice for me is always the same...dir some it would be Talisker, Ballantines, Jack Daniels, Glen Grant, whatever, but my Number One was and forever will be

woodford Double Oaked. Since Blanton's has become ridiculous to get, unavailable or way overpriced, The double Oaked is my favorite replacement.

For Bourbon, I’ve been really into Maker’s Mark lately—smooth and a bit sweet. Buffalo Trace is another great choice if you’re into something more robust. For Scotch, Glenfiddich 12 is a solid classic, but if you’re into a smoky kick, try Ardbeg 10. As for Japanese whisky, Nikka From The Barrel blew me away with its rich flavor.

As a whiskey nerd with hundreds of bottles, it depends on what flavor profile you like. Someone mentioned trying one from each category to see what you like first and I think that's a good suggestion.

Here are some starters:
Islay: Lagavulin 16 or Laphroaig 10
Highland: highland park 15+
Campbelltown: springBank 10
Speyside: macallan 15+
Japanese: hibiki harmony, yamazaki or hakashu 12
Irish: green spot
Bourbon: Buffalo Trace, Weller, eh Taylor
Rye: willett 4yr
American: jack Daniels single barrel, high west
Taiwanese: kavalan
Sherry bombs: aberlour abunadh, tamdhu

Most on this list are cheaper bottles but once you define your favorite styles you can move up to nicer bottles

100% this!

There are some great whiskies on this list, a few of which I always have stocked in my cabinet (Laphroaig 10 and Hibiki Hramony especially). I don't recall ever trying a Taiwanese whiskey so Kavalan has jumped to the top of my try list!

If you can get your paws on it, give Bomberger’s Declaration a shot. It is a lot of bang for the buck and rides under the radar so the prices haven’t jumped to silly levels as of yet.

I really like Glenlivet 18. It is an exceptional single malt scotch whisky without the super high price.
