LED ZEPPELIN PLAY THE LAST NIGHT OF MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

tumblr_lp2mx1loUJ1qmle2jo3_1280.jpg

This was the final night of our American tour and here at Madison Square Garden recording and filming the concert. I was informed as we were on the side stage just before going on to perform that there had been a robbery at the Drake Hotel where the safety deposit box had been relieved of cash the previous night.

Somehow all this manifested in even more passion in that night’s performance.

‘RIGHT BY YOU’ BY STEPHEN STILLS IS RELEASED

Today in 1984 sees the release of Stephen Still’s album ‘Right By You’. Stephen had visited my aptly-named recording studio, The Sol, on the river Thames in Cookham, Berkshire so that I might supply some overdubs to his tracks; ‘50/50’, ‘Right By You’ and ‘Flaming Heart’ which were recorded on the 4th and 5th of May of this year.

tumblr_lp4aq8pOGz1qmle2jo3_500.jpg

I greatly respected Stephen’s work and would have preferred to have worked with him from source, but as it was, it was just overdubbing the session in England that had originated in the States.

THE YARDBIRDS PLAY THE KERRISDALE ARENA, VANCOUVER

tumblr_lp6k47RCFv1qmle2jo4_400.jpg

After another strenuous and frustrating episode at the Canadian border, we had come from San Francisco to Vancouver to play a psychedelic bonanza at the Kerrisdale Arena on this day and at the Garden Auditorum on the 1st. At this time, the Yardbirds album ‘Little Games’ had been released for about a week.

I soundchecked at Knebworth with Led Zeppelin

1010879.jpg

On this day in 1979, I did a soundcheck for the up and coming Led Zeppelin concerts over the weekends of the 4th and 11th of August 1979 at Knebworth, England. During the soundcheck, as we were playing ‘Trampled Under Foot’, I turned around to see John Bonham’s son, 13 year old Jason, playing on his father’s kit. This was probably the first time I played with Jason and was certainly not the last! John had gone out the front to hear how his kit sounded through the Knebworth-sized PA.

Cold Chisel, Iggy and the Stooges, Skindred and Red White and Blues take centre stage

Iggy Pop was on excellent form tonight as he and his band played the last Main Stage set before Soundgarden take to the stage later tonight.

Running through a plethora of hits from their extensive back catalogue, bare-chested Iggy was engaging, energetic, and above all, a brilliant showman. But would we ever expect anything less?

The crowd swarmed around Iggy as he descended into the crowd during the 50-minute set, but he wasn’t fazed as hands crept all over that torso.

Never slowing down, he darted about the stage in his black skinny jeans singing I Wanna Be Adored, and he certainly was adored by the Hard Rock Calling crowd tonight – as well as Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, who were watching his set from the side of the stage. You heard it here first!

02 AUG 1968

On this day in 1968, The Yardbirds travelled from Toronto, Canada over the border to the US to play two shows at the Fifth Dimension Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

See you in a couple of weeks guys, I off on a much needed vacation. :)

I CHECKED THE PROTOTYPE FOR THE NEW GIBSON NUMBER TWO LES PAUL
tumblr_lpbv8q7XJX1qmle2jo1_1280.png

On this day in 2009, I checked a prototype from Gibson, along with my guitar tech Lionall and Steve Hoyland (who did the original custom wiring), for what was a soon to be released Number Two Les Paul.
The original had been customised to allow new routing of the pickups by splitting the coils to employ new configurations, with two push-button switches attached to the scratchplate and push-pull adaptation to the volume and tone controls. This gave more variety of tone and out of phase settings.
This edition came out in January 2010 and sold out immediately!

I PLAYED DAYTON’S AUDITORIUM WITH THE YARDBIRDS
1050866.png

This was the first date of any American tour for me, and on this day I played with The Yardbirds on bass. In fact, although having had two visits to the States prior to this, this was the first time I ever played a show there. The first date here in Minneapolis, Minnesota on the 5th of August was at Dayton’s Department Store, 8th Floor Auditorium and the surroundings felt quite surreal.

I ATTENDED TOM KENNY’S WEDDING IN CORK, IRELAND

This was the day Tom Kenny, the lighting designer for the Jimmy Page / Robert Plant ‘Unledded’, ‘No Quarter’ and ‘Walking into Clarksdale’ projects got married to his lady wife in Kerry, County Cork in Ireland. A truly wonderful day. RP and I celebrated with some songs in their honour and jammed a few ditties at the reception. (Tom clearly came from a musical family, in fact, one of his brothers played the Uillean pipes.)

I played Montreux with Led Zeppelin

On this day in 1971, Led Zeppelin played the Montreux Casino, the first of two nights. The casino in Montreux was always a joy to play, with the warm generous hospitality of Claude Nobs, musicologist, bon viveur and host of the jazz festival. The setlist shows a good balance of the band’s recording career up to that point and we jammed some spirited blues numbers at the end of the set to complete the picture.

Hoping for the best and we'll pick it up when you return!

Hope this isn't out of line for the thread but I thought it only appropriate to post the following as it is noted on JimmyPage.com...

It was on this day in 2009 Les Paul passed away. Les Paul led the way for today's sounds and I think I can safely say his legend lives on in today's music.

Thanks Les and Rest in Peace!
