The Firm played Meadowlands with Les Paul

During ‘The Firm’ tour, we were due to play at Meadowlands, New Jersey. I’d hooked up again with Les Paul in New York, and was really keen to introduce him onstage and establish what a tremendous influence he had been on myself and a whole playing and recording generation. Les accepted the invitation and on that evening, surprised me by saying that he had a small investment in Meadowlands going back some years.

ON THIS DAY… 24 JUL 1967

‘Little Games’ by The Yardbirds was released.

‘Little Games’ by the Yardbirds was also released on this day in 1967. The music featured is the Screen Gem’s demo of ‘No Excess Baggage’ recorded by the band on this album.

In December 2003, the first Riffathon took place in Guildford and was won by Tommy Hubbard. It was a charity event for the ABC Trust.

In 2005, the second Riffathon was to take place at Hammersmith Palais. Brian May of Queen, the guitarist of The Darkness, Dan Hawkins and I had been asked to judge a number of guitarists as they played their riffs. I thought they might play original material, but the contestants performed versions of songs by Led Zeppelin and Queen. Martin Tomkins was the eventual winner that night.

I presented a Gibson Guitar to Scotty Moore at Air Studios

Scotty Moore had been a major inspiration in my early transitory days from acoustic to electric guitar. His character guitar playing on those early Elvis Sun recordings, and later at RCA, was monumental.

It was during the 50s that these types of song-shaping guitar parts helped me see the importance of the electric guitar approach to the music.

How Led Zeppelin’s First U.S. Show Almost Didn’t Happen
by: Matt Wardlaw

Led Zeppelin made their North American concert debut in Denver in
December of 1968 as the first band on a three band bill that also
featured Vanilla Fudge and Spirit, but as concert promoter Barry Fey
recalls, it’s a milestone that almost happened in a different city.

Writing in his memoir ‘Backstage Past,’ Fey remembers getting the call
from Vanilla Fudge’s booking agent Ron Terry a little more than a week
before the show, asking him to add another group to the Denver date,
which was already sold out. Fey refused at first, but Terry was
persistent and said “Barry, this group is called Led Zeppelin, they’re
going to be huge.”

Still unwilling to cave in, Fey got another phone call from Terry, who
told him “Vanilla Fudge has agreed to take $750 of the money you were
going to pay them and they’ll give it to Led Zeppelin if you’ll pay them
$750, too.”

Considering this, Fey thought about the fact that Vanilla Fudge was
offering to give some of their money to a group that “no one’s ever
heard of, that’s never played in North America.” That must be something
that’s worth taking a look at, right? He made the deal with Terry and
booked Led Zeppelin for their first North American show for the
now-unbelievable sum of $750 out of pocket.

Led Zeppelin did not disappoint the Denver crowd with their debut
American performance. After introing the group, Fey watched the band
deliver a stunning set. To this day, he’s still amazed that Spirit
managed to go on after Zeppelin finished their show. He immediately saw
the future success that the group would have. “You didn’t have to be a
genius to know that Zeppelin was going to be a smash. Oh, my God. People
were going crazy!”

The following morning, Fey got a phone call from Max Floyd, the program
director at Denver’s rock station KLZ. “Who did you have on last night?
Our phone lines are jammed!” Luckily, Fey had in his possession a copy
of the band’s unreleased debut album, which he took over to the radio
station. They immediately put it on the air, playing it nonstop that day.

The moment would never be forgotten by Robert Plant, who spent time
backstage with Fey in 2011 following a concert performance in the area,
reminiscing how important that Denver date and the subsequent radio play
was to his old band’s early success.

I PLAYED VANCOUVER PNE AGRODOME, CANADA WITH LED ZEPPELIN

It was always good to play with Vanilla Fudge, we had supported them on our first tour of the States in 1968 and it was good to reciprocate.

The Vanilla Fudge had played one date in London at the Palladium Theatre in 1967. I missed this show, but I remember everyone talking about this amazing group, their drummer Carmine Appice and, especially, their sound system. They were always an exciting band to listen to. Their debut album had made a massive impression on musicians at that time.

I PLAYED MADISON SQUARE GARDEN WITH LED ZEPPELIN

On the 27th July 1973, we began the recording process for what was to become ‘The Song Remains the Same’. The film director for the project was Joe Massot who, with his film crew, had been to Baltimore and Pittsburgh two dates before New York and I hoped that they had become familiar with our shows rather than experience a baptism by fire at the run of shows at this wonderful concert arena. The sound recording was done with a mobile recording studio, courtesy of Bearsville Sound and Eddie Kramer handled the engineering on this and subsequent evenings. I knew this was going to be an epic over the next few days.

I PLAY THE CAMBRIDGE FOLK FESTIVAL WITH ROY HARPER

tumblr_lp0yr8OK8L1qmle2jo3_1280.jpg

I played with Roy an afternoon acoustic set and evening electric set at the Cambridge folk festival. Both sets were received with rapturous applause. I was already aware of Breton folk artist Alan Stivell but was really impressed with his set that day.
