I PLAYED JONES BEACH, NY WITH THE BLACK CROWES

The venue is an amphitheatre and I had warm memories of the audience at the Jones Beach venue from the Page and Plant ‘98 tour so I was looking forward to playing again for them, especially with The Black Crowes.

I played with The Black Crowes on the 'Late Night with Conan O’Brien' show

Conan O'Brien was a really bright guy, extremely personable and a muso. It was cool doing his show with The Black Crowes. We played 'Your Time Is Gonna Come' from the first Led Zeppelin album. The Black Crowes brought so much to the Zep songs we did in our time together.

I played with The Yardbirds at The Crimson Cougar Club in Aurora, IL

The audience was obviously a showcase for local cougars. Better still, I might leave this to your imagination.

I WENT TO SEE THE BLACK CROWES ‘FAIRWELL TO ENGLAND’ TOUR

tumblr_m733650HKb1qmle2jo1_500.jpg

This was the last night of the ‘Farewell To England’ tour and The Black Crowes asked me to jam on ‘Shake Your Money Maker’ as an encore. I just couldn’t say no, but felt really sad when I was told that this was said to be the last shows of such a brilliant band.

On this day… 15th July 2010

I WAS INTERVIEWED BY DUANE EDDY FOR BBC RADIO 2

Today I went to the BBC Studios in West London, where they had prepared a link up with Duane Eddy in Nashville for a radio programme. Duane was hosting a tribute programme to Les Paul and we discussed the massive pioneering contribution that Les had presented to the world with his composition, recording and playing techniques.

As Les had had a coast to coast television programme in the states; The Les Paul & Mary Ford Show between the years of 1954-1955, I think it is without a doubt that his music inspired a legion of guitarists that would become major influences themselves on the early rock and rockabilly scene emerging at that time.

Duane Eddy himself twanged the thang in the late 50’s and the 60’s and you can hear his character sound in more recent music. He has just released a new album, let’s wish him all the best.

I PLAYED AT THE ALEXIS KORNER BLUES TRIBUTE IN PISTOIA, ITALY

I was invited and played a set at the Piazza del Duomo in Pistoia in the town square. It was an established yearly festival. I was impressed by Georgie Fame’s rendition of Mose Allison’s Parchman Farm where he sang and played Hammond organ as a solo spot. After the festival Ginger Baker, who had also been appearing invited us for supper at his local home where he had a fine orchard of olive trees.

Music featured from an Alexis Korner benefit in Nottingham. The musical clip comes from another Alexis Korner Blues Tribute night I had played one month earlier with Ian Stewarts ‘Rocket 88’ in Nottingham, with the wonderful Ruby Turner on vocal.

I PLAYED THE SEATTLE KINGDOME WITH LED ZEPPELIN

On this day in 1977, Led Zeppelin played the Kingdome in Seattle, an indoor venue that held 70,000 people. It felt surreal, as we entered the building through an airlock door.

Below is a section of my solo spot that features the theremin and the bow and the exploration of both. It’s lengthy but gives an example of my avant garde journey with this sonic architecture.

I played with Led Zeppelin in Frankfurt, Germany

tumblr_m7bwieqYVT1qmle2jo1_500.jpg

During the 1970 Led Zeppelin tour of Europe, sandwiched between Essen and Berlin, I played Frankfurt with Led Zeppelin with its close proximity to US military bases. The audience always had a strong showing of those servicemen and women.

Elvis Presley had been stationed at Friedberg whilst in the army and it’s rumoured that Elvis himself attended some shows in Frankfurt back in the day - it’s highly probable that we played ‘Frankfurt Special’ that evening in the rock ‘n’ roll medley during ‘Whole Lotta Love’ to pay tribute to both Elvis, Frankfurt, and G.I. Blues. If we didn’t play it that time, I think we played it every other time we played Frankfurt!

Jimmy attended a midsummer’s eve party for the Tommy Roberts book launch

http://www.paulgormanis.com

There were big smiles for Tommy Roberts at the midsummer’s eve party to celebrate the publication of my new book Mr Freedom – Tommy Roberts: British Design Hero. Our hosts were publisher Jenny Ross and Tommy’s son Keith, who threw open the doors of his Shoreditch shop Two Columbia Road to a thoroughly enjoyable gathering of friends, family and fans.

You're doing a fantastic job B...And if it were not for your effort, it would not have continued. So it's just as much yours as mine, and also belongs to the great bunch we have peaking in from time to time.

PAGE AND PLANT PERFORMED AT THE JONES BEACH THEATER, LONG ISLAND NY

I played on the Page and Plant Project promoting the ‘Walking into Clarksdale’ album at Jones Beach. It was the last date of the first leg of the North American tour. The Jones Beach Theater is an Amphitheatre in Long Island. For me it was one of the best shows; a memorable performance. The band really connected.

The high points were serial and intensified throughout the set. The drummer Michael Lee and I had an emotional hug when we came offstage.

20th July 1966.....

I PLAYED STOURBRIDGE TOWN HALL, UK WITH THE YARDBIRDS

On this day in 1966, I played with five very alive Yardbirds. Jeff was in the band and we played some twin guitars at this time, but primarily I was on bass. It was Stourbridge, waking up the Midlands!

Night Flight: Inside Led Zeppelin’s private jet on NBC Nightly News, 1973

An NBC Nightly News report from July 31, 1973 awkwardly segues from an introduction about criminal activity to a story about how Led Zeppelin are so rich that they can afford to rent their own private jet.
Led Zeppelin used to park themselves in big city hotels (New York, LA, Chicago, Dallas) and then would fly in and out of the smaller cities and back that same night, ferried to and fro between hotels, airports and concert halls via a squadron of limousines.
“The Starship,” as the former United Airlines Boeing 720 passenger jet was re-dubbed by its owners (Ward Sylvester and pop singer Bobby Sherman) had been modified at the cost of nearly a quarter of a million dollars, with the intention of renting it out to touring super-groups. Swivel chairs, a bar, and a 3/4” Sony U-matic videocassette player and TV were installed (The plane’s library contained films ranging from Deep Throat to the Marx Brothers), and a bedroom, for “privacy” was built into the back of the plane. Shag carpeting, champagne, the Starship had it all, even President Nixon’s Air Force One didn’t compare. There were two stewardesses on the plane and it cost $2500 an hour to run.
John Bonham was once rumored to have flown the jet from Los Angeles to New York. Legend also has it that he once drunkenly tried to open the jet’s hatch to take a pee while the plane was flying over Kansas City…
Having your own private jet these days, no big deal. Back in 1973, only demi-gods owned them and such a story would make The NBC Nightly News. The reporter doing the voice over seems to be annoyed that young guys in their 20s wearing bell-bottoms would have this much money.
