Bitten by the Daytona bug. If I want to build a 6263 on a Valjoux 72 movement. What is the best to do. Is a yuki dial recommended? And is a cartel case a good base for mods?
Pretty breathtaking. It takes a very special person and a very special setting to wear this. Reminds me of John Mayer who reportedly spent about $5,000,000 on Rolex watches, most of them bought via celebrity dealer Robert Maron. Turns out some of them were not born "exactly like that," but carried parts from other donors. Since all the parts were authentic, it's near impossible to truly authenticate such vintage watches.

The best build specs without going crazy on gen parts:
Phong case ($1500)
Phong handset ($125)
MQ top grade dial ($600-$700)
GEN coronet for dial ($125)
Valjoux 72 donor ($1500)
Valjoux 72 servicing cost ($500)
Total: $4350
I can get it for a little cheaper because I go directly to the case and dial makers.
For the crazy ones (aka me included) the conversion to Rolex cal 727 is necessary. Phong charges $3500, I can do it for less but still a crap ton of $ - but then you'll have a 1:1 watch for a fraction of the gen
Conversion to 727 ($3500)
Total: $7850
Cartel case requires a lot of modding -essentially shaving it down slowly to fit a V72 and because it's not made for a v72 it has incorrect proportions and of poor quality. If you're already going with a $1500 movement (plus $500 to service it), then I wouldn't go cheap on the case - or anything else for that matter). If you're just using cartel movement (ST19) then its fine. I wouldn't put a V72 in there.
For the ballers, here's a 18k 6263 Paul newman just completed for a friend - solid gold [emoji51]
The prices on these gens have gone crazy in recent years. I only hope that we can all enjoy superfrankens before gen movements go beyond affordability. I have no doubt that in 3-5 years a gen movement will cost $5,000 by itself.
What about the calibre 1570, 1575 and 3035 movements? Will the tide lift all ships or just some?

Sick!
Yes, was a bit afraid that a cartel case wouldn't be suffice. Are there other options than phong cases? How about yuki cases?
And modding it to 727 movement is really taking it next level, respect for that effort!
A regular v72 would be good enough for me.
