i heard that when they did the testing at the bikini islands , the "device" blew a 1/2 mile column of water 3 miles into the air .......or maybe it was a 3 mile column 1/2 mile into the air.....any way it ws alot of water and it stripped the paint off the ships , and stood one ship on end

Well on a pleasant change of topic, I have post graduate/doctoral training in nuclear physics and weapon design has always been a primary academic interest. Maybe I'd have contracted with the military if I didn't pursue a medical career... the low and medium energy stuff I deal with is rather boring!

I wonder if you are referring to the Castle Bravo event ? The US gov miscalculated the fusion potential of the lithium isotope mix, resulting a blast several times more powerful than the theoretical maximum predicted yield. It resulted in a massive radiologic disaster too.

The Russian 'Tsar Bomba' was the largest yield weapon ever detonated, and also the cleanest based on fallout/yield... had they used an fissionable tamper it would have been about double the yield with orders of magnitude more fallout. Luckily most fission fallout decays fairly rapidly; I-131 is a major product which I use almost daily at work - it is the 'magic bullet' that achieves a 99% cure rate for common forms of thyroid cancer. Also it's now being tagged to various monoclonal antibodies to fight other cancers.

Anyone interested in this stuff should watch the old documentary 'Trinity and Beyond'... it's fascinating and worthwhile history lesson.

If they wer still alive, I would have recorded a great video of them talking about it all. It's really interesting. Nuclear ANYTHING is amazing. And I as well took several classes on weapons of mass destruction. We had to design our own WMD and our professor is (or was when I had him) part of an external consult group for the government. I, of course, turned in into a biological warfare class and everything I designed was based off that. One day a virus will take over, and wipe the human population into another bottleneck. I would assume it'll be a zoonotic virus, I prefer it to be a super strain of some hemorrhagic virus, as they are almost the perfect virus. Almost. Granted, I think we are on the brink of the 6th extinction as it is, but I guess I fall into the section of those loons of a scientist.. anyways, love some nerd talk [emoji851]
