Thoughts: Is Panerai fading?

I may be mistaken, but it seems that the PAM's are fading more in the REP world than the Gen's are. Yes, the Gen's are fading a bit. But settling in quite well IMO.
I see more and more of them in the wild. That almost "Never" happened in years past.

I still have 25 or so PAMs but admittedly I haven't bought one in a while. I think the Equation of Time will get me however. Mind you that illustrates a point as the EoT is not your average PAM.

Definitely my thoughts guys! I am glad this topic is here.

I have been a huge fan of PAMs back in 2004-2009, had pretty much every possible rep that was available then, including some holy grails at the time like first EL 1950, Honpo 187, first 029 with decorated 2892 etc etc.

Ended up getting a genuine 112 as I wanted more of what reps could not offer at that time (lume, movement finish, even crowns used to be too skinny in reps and we had to get replacements from Lelloo).

The gen 112 got sold at some point, replaced by gen 116520 Daytona and I have to say I did not really miss the pam.

A few months back I decided to get into Panerai again and bought a current 112 rep.

Wow I was blown away. Amazing how far reps of PAMs have gone over last few years. Correct lume, correct crowns, beautiful crown guards, very nicely finished movements that now pretty much all they miss is polish on the edges of movement wheels (close enough for me). Who needs a genuine of basic model now, I for sure would not go gen again, the rep is just as good for literally fraction of the price.

As for new gen models, I feel panerai is going way too far away from its roots and history. Most new gens look like reps to be honest. Way too overpriced as well.

I mean look at this tourbillon:

PAM 350, listed for sale at 120k usd! Looks like a cheap 21j skeleton fake tourby rep. Is that still panerai?

I'd agree -- its head and shoulders above 99% of the other tourbies out there and is mesmerizing to watch.

Um, are you serious? If you are you have no idea what you are talking about mate, do some reading. The ONLY reason Panerai is still around is those two. When Sly saw the brand in Italy whilst shooting a movie and bought a heap for friends Panerai were dying. They had maybe a half dozen outlets outside of Italy and not that many more within and were selling a few hundred pieces a year. Sly saved the company, they owe him their very existence.

Wowsers man. I ain't hating on them, just asking whether the newer generation (particularly in the UK/EU) want to emulate the style of ageing American super heroes that are filled to the brim with Botox?

Don't get me wrong, these guys are genuinely heros! Always will be! But are they cool in 2016? Didn't think so. The brand has to become cool to survive at the price point they are charging. Hence need for a massive marketing makeover.

I loved arnie/Stallone as a child (still do) but are they still relevant in 2016? Perhaps. What do I know.

I travel a lot between UK, Germany, France and Netherlands and I have NEVER seen a PAM in the wild. Seriously, I haven't....and I stare at people's wrists all the time.

On an international level, super heroes like Arnie and Stallone are fading away from the lime light and they're taking PAM with them.

Again, i disagree... Expendables the movie is doing quite well.. Creed.. These two are actually making headlines recently... They are making some blockbusters recently...
