I can't believe this sh*t. Lowering costs by putting springbars and snap on caseback? Wtf? They saved $5 and put away a lot of customers with it. I'm really dissapointed. Even if I could afford one of these models, I wouldn't buy them because of that reason.

As I understand it this was an intentional move to pick up customers left behind by their prices escalating due to the move toward in house movements.
Many Swiss makers are starting to recognize the need to diversify for survival.

Thanks for the honest comments guys. I too still love panerai and have for years. I own a genuine 104. But there seems to have been a shift in their focus the last few years and their prices for used markets have dropped pretty drastically.

Too many new models, too much marketed "limited editions" only to be followed by a similar one, possibly the hype is wearing off a bit.
I love the classics, but imho they try too much too fast and are dissipating the brand image. Objectively they are a "new" brand with barely 20 Years of history. Following 1997 "Richemont´s Panerai" bought all the patents, moved the factory to Switzerland and hired a batallion of good lawyers and marketing strategists but -except sharing the pictures and exploiting the heritage and protecting the patents - they have quite little to do with the original manufacture Orologi da Tasca of Giovanni and Guiseppe Panerai.
Panerai always used external, reliable and easy to service movements, I wonder what the service costs on in-house movements in 10 and 20 years will be, it won´t be cheap or fast for sure.
Strangely after some time with Panerai I also rediscovered my love for slim 36mm and 39mm watches that have been put apart and nearly forgotten.
Still - Paneristis are forever - and You don´t need a loupe to see the time:)

x2!

I totally agree with nalomb. Recent busy dials, movements with funky complications and, frankly, too many new models are dragging the brand too far from its essence. Panerai is a base dial and a crownguard. The paradigm of less is more.

Can't agree more ... The only advantage for me is that I have a chance to get all of those I love ... the latest novelties are not interesting for me...gens and reps...I love the simplicity, too and the small differences on the early models are the things that I like ( a main thing because my wife does not realize that I have a new watch again ;) - unfortunately she's getting into PAMs for herself since a few weeks and gets better in spotting the details;))

Grrrr!

Thank Goodness that my Wife Loves Pams. And has for years now. Even when watching a movie at home, she will often have me stop the film for her to see if it really is a PAM she is seeing. LOL!!!

I also think panerai value had dropped. The preowned value of panerai is getting lower and lower. I will just think of this as an advantage. Preowned 372 is around 5k usd which is a great deal :) Time to pick up gen Pams people.

What it worked with panerai is simple ..the simplicity of a watch ... look at MB&F's New Glow, they have this new lume that is amazing ... panerai should keep simplicity .. nice classic cases not bussy dials and find new lume ideas like mb f

Sorry, $5k is 12 "super reps" or 10 custom vintage builds. I make decent cheddar, but I'm not spending used E46 money on a watch. That's why I'm here. :)

IMHO the Panerai management makes the usual mistake of a fast growing luxury brand: overdiversifying! Too many new variations and models, losing the USP of the brand – simplicity, toughness and the historical roots of a diver's tool watch... just my 5 cent ;-)

I'm all for new lume ideas -- and there some pretty rad options out there. But I'd rather rip my dick off than wear an MB&F. IMHO of course haha.

I hear what your saying, but there are other sides of this coin as well.
The term "Tool Watch" use to be used here often. VERY often! Not so much now days. Even we are seeing it as a Luxury Item more and more

As far as a Divers Watch goes, I have had a Gen 24 for years. I posted pic's of it here several years ago. It generated 0 interest. Now, suddenly, the Drivers are Cool!
I know of NO watch company that offers so many Divers.

My point being, taste change. In the watch world, as in any other.

One of the biggest complaints I have heard from NON Pam owners, is that they all look alike. (We Paneristi now better)!
Well, maybe Pam was listening to this as well.

I will say this, for all those out there that echo All Pams Look alike, well what other watch company gives you these kinds of choices?

You want a Black dial, Got it!
Black dial with Dot marker, Got it.
Stick Markers, Got it.
Numeral Markers, Got it.
How about mixed stick markers and numerals? You guessed it. Arabic-Roman---

Want it with seconds at nine like a pocket watch, Got it!
Standard seconds on the CP, well Got that too!
GMT ok, no problem.

Like a full mirror polish, no problem.
How about a full mirror case, but a brushed bezel? Yep!
Or a brushed case and a mirrored bezel? Yep, got that too.
Or mix and match. Full polish, and a brushed Crown Guard.

LIke something besides black dial?
How about blue? blue in light, or dark?
Flat black,
Shiny black,
Grey
Starburst, (engine turned)
Silver
Bronze
dark brown
Plain White?

strong lume
sunken lume
raised lume
bordered lume
open lume
white lume
green lume
vintage lume
tritium lume
super luminova

Leather strap with buckle

Stainless steel bracelet

Rubber with buckle
Rubber with deployment buckle
Kevlar
Luxury strap
Work style strap
Exotic Leather strap
antique look
Wall st. Look to Soup Kitchen look
For the Board Room to Ranch, to the desert and or hunting fields, and Battle Fields.

Cases made from Stainless Steel
Titanium
Gold
Rose Gold
Even really old school Bronze!
Did I mention PVD and DLC?
I've even heard of a few sneaking around in platinum, but never see a pic of one!

Did I mention you can get a Diver in a Luminor case as well?

Movements?

Hand wind
Automatic
With date
Without date
Inhouse movements
traditionally outsourced movements
GMT's' Tac's, ............

Whew! And all this, in just the Luminor alone! Want a different size Luminor, well got that too! And most of these have been available for years. Nothing new here!

Now tell me this, just what other Luxury Watch Company gives these choices in what is basically the same watch. With only Reference numbers changing? I can't think of one!
Not one!!!

I see more and more Pams both in the wild, and on tv,movies. So they are becoming more and more popular than ever before. Sure we have possibly lost the "I can wear a Pam, and no one will bother me about it like a Rolex" thing, but they are becoming mainstream in the luxury watch market.

So what ever they are doing, it may not be to our liking, but the Luxury Watch Buying Public is really starting to pay attention!

What I see being complained about here, is in the end, unadulterated Success! Is this not what we would wish for Panerai?
Think about it!

Kinda ironic that this is coming up on a REP Forum, when just about all we do is talk endlessly about the differing details of all the different models. And how we just can't' wait to get the Next Great Thing. The one watch in which we can get just about anything we want.
Well, unless it's a Rep. I still want a diver, with stick or baton markers on 12 and 6, 47mm, and no dayum exhibition case back! Grrrrrr!!!

I know ..they look stupid those watches but this 2016 they came up with a new lume material and that should be for a pam ... a sub pam should have lume bezel also ... many cool ideas for new pams imo

They took a bunch of heat when they chose not to decorate a movement not that long ago...offered to replace the bland one...All signs of greedy, senior level management....They better be careful!

Panerai is in the midst of a marketing crisis.

One of their most important brand ambassadors, Sylvester Stallone, is ticked off at Panerai for reissuing a slytech model without his input or approval(or royalty) Panerai used basically the same design, but instead switched out slytech for "daylight" in their branding. The marginal benefit of additional revenue from this model cannot possibly offset the long term damage to its brand equity.

Arnold S is moving on to his own brand.

Folks, as much as we love beautiful watches and appreciate them for what they are, the brands survive on their brand equity. Another member mentioned, an $8000 eta powered panerai compares favorably with a $500 rep with minimal variation. The reason Panerai can charge 8000 is because of its brand cache! And consumer tastes can be fickle. I've heard anecdotes that the Asian market which used to love the brand, are now moving on to alternatives at Panerai's pricepoint. It makes sense, you splurge for a luminor, a radiomir, now what else do you need?

So looking at the drivers:

Over-diversifiction with similar looking/performing models
Decreasing media attention and brand cache
Loss of two major brand ambassadors, Arnold and Stallone.

Strategically, Panerai is on the defensive, strongly milking its cash cows. Its previous strategy of investing into in-house movements has not payed off yet in the short term, as the WIS who understand and would be interested in complex, inhouse movements are currently unhappy with Panerai's product selection. With the loss of their brand ambassadors, their marketing image is at jeopardy, magazine advertisements will only take your brand so far.
