Thoughts: Is Panerai fading?

As beautiful and well crafted as this is- I can't help to notice why they would do this ? To show off their watch making skills ? What do they have to proof ?

The essence of panerai has always been it's minimalist design and robust military style build. These features should be best left for the likes of Patek and VC

Can you imagine Rolex coming out with their minute repeater tourby gold sub? Surely someone would buy it - but what does that say about the brand ?

No wonder they are fading from heir prime.

Having said that if their base models drop to the 2k-3k USD I would definitely buy them over the reps.

I would say they are not in vogue as much as they once were......styles in fashion have moved on so Pams are still classics but not hot

I don't think so...I'm a fairly new geek & have recently came across this brand.

Unable to afford the genuine item just yet, I find myself PAM crazy & cannot wait to have one on my wrist - even if just a homage at first :)

To think that all their watches have a similar look & feel, with a few minor design variances here & there - they're all Highly Desirable!

Panerai is a good source for beginners IMO because you have tons of options for straps and also for the models

but at the end, after owning many gen and rep paanerai models, they release "new" models by just changing the dial color or with even smaller modifications. IMO it is already faded. I wonder when they will release a "new" bronzo (maybe a destro) to suicide

All of them are my personal thoughts of course. If you like it, I respect that

I am new to Pam's and the ones I have I can't take off my wrist. I just LOVE them ! If they are fading.... then I missed that.... It wouldn't matter to those of us that are new to the brand.
I LOVE my Pams .... they have grown on me in a way I can't explain. lol

This will happen definitely for Panerai! I am not sure how many people here can read Chinese. A very popular article wrote by A famous Chinese watch lover released several years ago and predicted this will happen some time because:1, so call "limited edition" is not limited at all;2, duplicate and boring design that Panerai made for his product; 3, rep watch is 95% similar with the gen.

Doesn't this apply to the rolex sub as well?

You're exactly right, kilo. The only thing that is different is that Rolex values hold up relatively well in the secondary market and Rolex doesn't change their designs that much -- kind of a 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mentality. But the premise of the article could apply to any brand that's a mainstay in the luxury watch market.

Panerai's design cues have largely been a miss on new products in the past 12-24 months and it seems they are either trying to reinvent a wheel that doesn't need to be reinvented or going down a path that diverges from the origination of their success -- both recipes for disaster IMO.

On things like the skeleton and minute repeater, I liken it to concept cars that every company does -- it shows the capabilities of the design team and more often than not, fleshes out ideas that improve products in the next few years -- Cadillac, Ford, Mercedes and Jaguar are brands that come to mind that have really benefited from 'outside the box' thinking even though it looked god-awful when they debuted on the convention floor. For Panerai, the 3-D printing of cases to minimize weight could have really cool implications for future models -- who knows.

I've taken a Rodney Dangerfield outlook of 'its all sh!t' recently, so just buy what you like and damn the torpedoes I guess haha.
