Go lock yourself in your office and tell her your xmas shopping online for her and not to disturb you or it will ruin the surprise. The surprise being the completed watch for your internet friends to admire. If I get a moment this weekend, I'll be (hopefully) finishing some builds. One or two are Explorers, although not 1016.
A 5500 with a gen case and a 5700 Explorer Date with a gen case and dial.
If only the girlfriend and the Holidays would give me a few uninterrupted hours, lol.
heh?
I did I was just " checking over the inventory". I had to swap in a new seconds hand on the 6482 as it was swinging loose on a Saturday . was just posting what I had on the bench at the time .heh?
i thought you sold the albino and the tropical?
Oh nice. Do you have fotos of your builds? I actually thought about buying a "cheap" gen 5500 and put an aged yuki dial on it... the deal does not seem so bad if you see how much even gen 34 mm cases cost theese days.. would also be a really nice opportunity to try and service a gen movementIf I get a moment this weekend, I'll be (hopefully) finishing some builds. Had a somewhat productive night, finished a couple small projects and kind of laid out the groundwork for what comes next.Oh nice. Do you have fotos of your builds? When did these go up for sale? These are both
Wow that is really cool. Yeah i wanted to do something in the direction yo went, still debating the gen movement thing... ETA is fine too but i thought about some 1520 aftermarket hands and the problem with the dial feet you also cae across... ill have to do the math but if you can get a complete 5500 for arround 1500 and on ebay a case without crown already costs 700....Had a somewhat productive night, finished a couple small projects and kind of laid out the groundwork for what comes next.
I have some Submariner builds in the works, a 5513, 5517, and 1680, and I've got a couple different 5500 cases, a 6694 case in 34mm and an older 36mm case. Not sure how they're all going to come together, but after practicing with decal printing dials, I think there's a LOT of potential there. I learned tonight that all 34mm cases are NOT the same, as the case for the 6694 is too big for a 5700 dial, so if you're looking to build with a gen dial or case, make sure it's compatible with its counterpart!
So I snapped some photos to share and am open to any and all advice.
Three up next to finish, although I still need some parts and will probably swap the cases around a bit:
This is a Mochacha dial I got from M2M here, in a gen 5500 case, I have a very similar dial from Yuki incoming, so am curious to see which one looks better. With a nice set of ETA hands, it should be an easy project to finish.:
I've been obsessively reading the threads here and the sister forums on decal printed dials, and have finally got to the point where I'm going to see how I can get them to turn out. This is LITERALLY the first one I tried, on a scrap piece of brass that's got dents and was rough sanded just to see how it would turn out. A lot of potential here for improvement, but I'll be damned if this isn't gorgeous for a first effort. No prep, no finishing techniques, just hammered the scrap flat, rough sanded it with like 120 grit that I had handy, and slid on the decal. Best case scenario, the dial is polished glossy, maybe gold plated, then finished in matte acrylic after the decal is applied. In another 5500 gen case.
This is a gen Explorer Date dial from Ebay, in a gen 6694 case, which is oddly too big for the dial. I'll have to pick up another case from somewhere, preferably a 5700, and I'm trying my damndest to avoid cutting the feet off the dial...which means either I modify an ETA movement (which is possible, but I'm told very difficult, going to see if I can 3d print a jig and do it myself) of suck it up and pay the ridiculous price for a gen movement...I think this takes a 1520. The dial was beat up enough, and cheap enough, that I was just going to clip off the feet, but after seeing what gen Explorer Dates can go for, even in rough condition, I think I'm going to treat it a little nicer, lol.
And this is the gen 6694 dial that goes with the case above. It'll probably go back together, get an ETA movement and hands, and become my daily beater. Not a bad looking watch, and rough enough that I won't stress about bumping it into stuff.
If you have the tools, dismantle the bezel, else you have to be very carefull while shaping ;-) The NH35 should just fit plug and play with the plastik movement holder it came with. The krown will keep it from turning arround in the caseI have received all raffles parts. Raffles mercedes hands were noticeably different than the aliexpress ones I have. They seem a bit higher quality. I started lightly shaping the case tonight. Looking to finish "aging" the case and bracelet tomorrow. I plan to just throw it into a bag of coins and then polish a few times.
First watch build... So basic question. Will I need to use the provided movement ring and movement clamps? The NH builds I have seen online just use the plastic NH25 movement holder.
Good Luck!bought light and dark ocre earth water color pencils, plus a white
also a very fine brush
wish me luck
Yeah, I've seen fairly nice Air King 5500 selling for well under $2k, and rough ones for about $1500 or a bit less. I think what I might wind up doing (eventually) is buying one, using the movement for the Explorer, then selling the case, bracelet, dial, and hands. With any luck, it might actually be a wash. A 1520 and 1570 are the same movement, with some parts swapping (per here), so it's techinically not a terribly difficult task, and not a bad long-term project.Wow that is really cool. okGood Luck!
Remember - you can just rinse gently under water whilst brushing very lightly if you go too far!
You raving madman Karbon!!!ok
epic fail.
the water color did not hold when I wiped it with the cleaning swipe
Then, when dried just gently polish off the colour from the metal parts of the hand by gently rubbing them face down on some blue roll or soft paper. That will remove the watercolour paint from the metal leaving just the coloured lume. You raving madman Karbon!!!
You did fine, get the hand lume to the colour you desire. LET THEM DRY.
