Where did you learn this technique with the furniture polish. or was this a trial and error type thing. interesting , nice work thanks for sharing.
Furniture polish has loads of ingredients and some of them are there to eliminate water stains on your Granny's dining rooom table. ;)

True enough. I just never thought of using it on a watch dial. I would think it would leave a residue or possibly disrupt the pad printed text .

My wife was already giving me the side eye for using:
- the WC cleaner fluid
- the oven
- the coffee
- random takeaway boxes to hold watch parts
- her nail files
- her nail varnish
- her super expensive makeup set (actually, this I did when she was not home, else I'd be already dead)

what's a can of furniture polish, pahh

Add to that,
Wife: "Are you actually using your own pee on that watch dial?"
Self: "Yes Dear, it's to accelerate oxidation of the indices lume" . . .pause..."It's complicated."

Family photo. (A few are missing)

They are all lovely -
But if you had to choose just one to be marooned on that desert islnad - which one would you choose? (And you're not allowed to say the one with the built-in SAT Phone!

Difficult question for a Sunday morning

Winter is starting in Canada and if I did have a SAT phone, I can assure you I would not be calling anyone to be rescued , I think I would really enjoy the break and the quite :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

By process of elimination :

Albino - its cool but its not really a beach vibe kinda watch.
Commando - hand wind , will probably end up full of sand and wearing out the winding mechanism
Tropical 1&2 although appropriate , I want the opportunity to create a 3rd , naturally 🌴
Ruby mk2 one of my faves but .....
Raffles 6610 - lovely dial but I think I would want a true gilt dial to keep me amused.

So it would comes down to the true gilt 6610 and gilt 6350 which makes this a difficult decision...
I would choose of those as I think It would be likely that the UV and heat would eventually affect the pigments on the dial and change the appearance - hopefully to my liking and not just peal up and melt off :ROFLMAO:

I really like both and if I had to those would be the last 2 I would ever sell

As much as I love the 6350 which is a grail of mine , the dial is very interesting however I do get kinda bored of the pencil hands at times. so I think I would like to bring the gilt dial 6610 There is a enough visual interest to the piece with the gloss dial, gilt details, gilt merc hands and the white seconds hand. It would be really cool if It could turn tropical , provided I am alive long enough to enjoy it lol

The 6610 is kind of the underappreciated underdog of the explorer family but I think it during its time it has offered alot of unique details that no other explorers have had.
first year red depth text on dial
gilt gloss dial finish
gilt hands
white lollipop seconds hands - shared with the 6538 of the same years.

and if by some chance I get recognized for being the guy that lives on an island with his explorer in a hodinkie article , years from now I wanna give it a bump in popularity :ROFLMAO:

🌴🌴

Whats your pick?

I agree with your comment on the pencil hands. It's a nice change but, well, it's straight

that's why I picked the honeycomb. You need texture and shapes if you are stranded. anything to stave boredom.

ps: can I be stranded with my tools and a delivery service from Raffles? It would become a paradise suddenly 😅

That's a beauty. The darker tropical dial for me - I can watch it slowly bleach in the desert island sun.

Talking about sitting there making watches - we'd need to refine cocunut oil and palm leaf oil and we can throw in movement servicing.

Really would be happy as anything. Leave the rest of the World behind.

Not QUITE a 1016 question, but since the Explorer experts are all present here, I have a question.

I'm having a hard time finding information that I trust on this, but I figured I'd ask the experts. I've got an old case set from a gen Air King 5500 (34mm), and thinking about building up a watch with an Explorer dial and hands. Rolex made a 5500 Explorer for a time, and I always liked the size of the 34mm case for daily, casual wear.

I would probably go with an ETA clone movement and rep dial and hands (possibly my first DIY gilt dial, depending on how they come out, but maybe just a Raffles or comparable to start).

I know on the Raffles site, they use a 27mm dial for their 34mm cases, and a 28.5mm dial for their 36mm cases. Rolex dials for 36mm watches are 26mm, IIRC, do they use a smaller dial in the 34mm cases, or are all of their 34mm/36mm dials the same size?

IE, can I use a Raffles 28.5mm Explorer dial in a gen 34mm case? It seems like worst case scenario, I'd just have to machine ~1mm around the perimeter of the Raffles dial, but maybe I'm missing something here...
Here is a DIY on reducing the size of dial diameter

Can I install the t21 crystal in the ruby case? Or is there something closer to the gen glass- a thinner option?

I have no experience of Ruby cases so I do not know.
I installed a T21 just fine on the Raffles case with a slight increase of the bezel I.D. at the hands of a Dremel.

The cheeky thing ordered this strap for itself behind my back which arrived this morning. I really rather like it.
