There is something about the contrast between the cold steel of a well-worn Oyster bracelet and the golden glow of a well-patinated gilt dial and hands that is magic... is (was) this Raffles 6610 dial? This is going to have to be my next build... unless I can convince you to pass it on to me

Edit: answered my own question https://forum.replica-watch.info/threads/explorer-6610.10941280/#post-11623237
Yes it does its quite magical . I do think you can get a similar appearance with the raffles dial .

You guys are not helping my need to throw an Explorer dial in a GEN 5500!

Anyone know a good source for REP 5500 Explorer hands for a GEN 1520 movement?

I think Yuki sells some, not sure how accurate they are.

Whats the difference between 1016 and 5500 hands ?

WSO helentou and clarks sell hand aets for gen movements.

Would 5500 hands be slightly shorter, to accommodate the smaller case? No idea.

This is what I'm thinking... 34mm case vs 36mm case...
If the dial opening is the same, they wouldn't need to be sized differently (ie, the distance from center pinion to edge of dial), but I'm not sure if they are. My brain's stuck on Raffles cases, and those aren't gen-sized.

That said, with a 50 year old watch, the odds that the hands were swapped with a 1016 (or 5513, for that matter) during service aren't comlpletely remote.

Dial on the 1016 is 28mm and the 5500 is 27mm... so I would expect they might be ~0.5mm shorter but that's not particularly noticeable, to anyone outside of this thread :ROFLMAO:

and easily fixable with a steady hand and some fingernail clippers.

I also really love my “oak cake”.
I was on a walk last Autumn when I spotted a guy chopping these cakes of a felled oak that had come down in recent storms and I asked him if I could have one. He asked me why and I said I was a watchmaker and I would like it as an anvil - as a desktop. He handed one over and it’s become a wonderful platform for all my activities. .

Wow, that's a really simple, outside the box solution...the surface has ridges and is soft, so parts won't bounce and roll off it, is able to be hammered on without marring the watch case...sometimes nature really does deliver the best tools for a job.

Absolutely that. The Bergeon mat is great - and you have to have one, etc.
But working on a really great piece of wood is what watchmakers have always done - it's the perfect platform for most tasks - and you're absolutley right; it'll stop a ground-level Pinger in it's tracks!

I guess I'll have to add "chainsaw" to my list of expensive watchmaking tools to find, lol.

I actually have a pretty nice Stihl chainsaw...bought it to cut down a tree in my backyard, and one for a girl I was trying to impress. Other than that, it's been sitting unused for 8 years, lol.
