Mighty quiet in this thread today. Decided to finish at least one watch today…I didn’t quite make it. Put together a raffles case that 369 mafia tweaked for me (shaping, new Clark’s crystal and bezel, raffles dial, Ali hands and strap).

Used the dial spacer ring, and need to take it all apart and remove it…it messes up the stem height. Might rethink the hands and strap, but I like it quite a bit at first blush.

369Mafia's work:
Raffles case set
1016L bezel
Clarks T21
engravinged between lugs
machine ID of bezel and fit 1016L bezel
enlarge lug holes to fit gen spec spring bars 1.2mm
narrow / shape lugs
soften edges of case set
age polished surface with hairline scratches and marks

The extent of my work is assembly and some very light patina on hands to bring them closer to the dial. I'll probably lightly age the dial (and match the hands) and that'll be the extent of it. Not every watch needs to look like it was at ground zero of a nuclear blast, lol.

Looks Sweet Dpd is that a raffles dial ?
Yes, right out of the box. I was going to hit it wtih a light layer of clear spray, to give it a little texture, but it actually has a really nice texture as is. I had planned on doing a little more aging, but got off to a late start and wanted to finish it before I went to bed, so it got a little rushed at the end. That said, the dial is gorgeous, with a subtle semi-gloss, textured black, and nice contrast between the white and off-white text. I will probably just dust it with some of the Tamiya "model make up" to even out the hands, maybe lightly age the hands, and leave it be. I just need to find the right strap for it.
I'll take it apart today and remove the dial spacer ring (never used one before, but figured Raffles wouldn't include it unless it was important, lol), trim the stem (that's just a crown screwed into the case, there's no stem in the watch) and consider it done.

I really never appreciated how much case finishing and a better crystal improves a watch...the Clark's crystal immediately popped when I opened the package, and it's miles ahead of the stock Raffles crystal.

I'll snap some better photos when I work on it tonight (as in, better light, less reflection, and a proper camera, rather than a cell phone).

Yes , the raffles dial dont need much, just something to make it look not so new out of the box,. I am glad that you are enjoying the case set with the crystal. Its a whole different look and feel . I look fwd to seeing it complete and with some brighter pics. nice work D

I got a call from a friend today clearing out an old mate's workshop (he was a Marine Electronics Engineer) saying that he had a small but very beautiful looking old lathe there and did I want it as "You do watchmaking and it looks like that sort of thing?"
I said yes please. I tried to draw him on Make, Stamps on it, etc but he just said he wasn't sure - it just looks very old and beautifully made.
I'm going to collect it in the morning and I'm having trouble containing my excitement even though every bone in my body tells me to prepare for disappointment.

We shall see.

I think even a very old, very limited lathe would open up a lot of possibilites. Just make sure it's a metal lathe (lower speed, higher torque) and not a wood lathe (higher speed, lower torque) before you try to turn a chunk of stainless steel!

I've been looking at them on Amazon, but the cheapest they realistically get is about $500, and they're not rated terribly well. I hope to happen upon something used online, but I figure patience is going to be required.

The friend who is emptying out the house is not engineering minded, so it could well be that he has no idea what he’s looking at so what will turn up in the morning remains a mystery, and will have to remain so until I clap eyes on it.

A better shot of the Raffles dial. The finish is sort of a semigloss with a little bit of physical texture. I liked it too much to really do anything to it, so I just color matched the hands.

And the finished build:

I concur, I like the color and the semi gloss somehow and left it as is.
Is that a NH38 movement?

@anyone any materials to suggest on mounting a dial on a NH movement?
Double sided tape? Epoxy? 3M heavy duty tape?
I know this has been discussed before but I’m curious how it holds up in the long run.
Please share if u have any experience!

I’m explorin’ new options to get rid of that damn piece of junk 2824 movement that I got lol, it has the ghost position removed ootb for about 50bucks but the winding and pinion is crap… bought a 2nd piece from the same seller but the 2nd movement is miles ahead…
Draw of the luck lol

So I guess the solution is still the standard double sided tape. Hmm.
Curious to see how it holds up overtime.

I have a spare NH movement that I might test to see if I can use the dial feet holes and DIY new dial feet positions for the ETA based dial I’m using…

this explains the process and so much more

For 28xx movements, I just buy Seagull $75 and you have a great movement with no issues of quality

keep us updated.
personallly, I have not dabbled with dial feet yet. IMHO double side tape, when applied with care, tend to grow more solid over time than to loosen up.

I used a 2824, but I have a couple NH35/NH38 from Ali that I plan to use in some upcoming builds. I think the Raffles dials have feet for both, unless the 38 is different than the 35,

rafflesdials are meant for miyotas or etas.

but looks like he silently released the honeycomb dial for the nh movement recently.

the other dials are still eta or miyota only.
