Checked out a few other pictures of it. I think it's the light that makes it look like there's a weird gap between SEL and case. Doesn't it look weird to you comparing it to its luxury Swiss competitors?

Not sure. I have a GS and I like the way the SEL fits. The fact that there is a little play makes it easier to take the bracelet off.

Wow the Seamaster looks very impressive. Heading over to relevant thread for a better analysis and potential buy.

A genuine Rolex will most likely keep its value with time, a rep won't.

OK So we will try a little experiment. You go to Rolex AD buy a new Daydate , keep it for a year and report back how much you get for it.

I will buy a Rep DD keep it for a year and see what I can get for it

How much would you like to bet that I will be infront ?

TC16610 and BKTW16610 will generally maintain value.

Most super-reps will also maintain value (minimal loss).

You will probably loose 1-2k as soon as you walk out the AD door with a new gen.

"Gens will maintain value" is just BS I tell the missus. Lol

And if it is a precious metal Rolex probably $10K

Great thread, The OP's original concept has been diverted somewhat but all contributions have been informative and/or entertaining.

All items have both actual and perceived value, for me Reps are much closer to actual value being manufacturing cost and a modest profit for manufacturers and re-sellers where as most mid-high priced Gens are by far mostly perceived value being peoples perception of quality and prestige.

Of course MOST Gens do have a higher actual value as per manufacturing and R & D costs but a much higher percentage of their retail cost is made up of marketing and sponserships so for me I'd rather be paying actual production costs than sponsoring tennis matches so Reps represents better value to me and my hobby given my income bracket.

Not to say that I wouldn't like to collect high end Gens but as the OP has stated for the purpose of owning a nice looking watch many of the Reps satisfy the urge.

Well I wouldn't pay full value for any watch in AD.. This summer got my Mrs a Datejust and got vat exception (this is 24%!!) so yes I got a brand new Rolex at the best possible price that will hold its value like for ever..
In anyway we buy reps because we love em, some franken will hold their value and some super reps as well like TC.. All other reps will lose their value quickly and makes sense, they are Chinese products with short model cycle

This reminds me of being in Europe a few years ago. I was at the counter at the airport where you get your tax back after purchasing an expensive item in the EU. The guy in front of us had spent something ridiculous like $250,000 on jewellery for his wife, but the office was refusing to refund the tax because he hadn't bought it in that country despite departing said country to return to the states. He was so furious and said it would cost a fraction of the rebate to fly back to the original country of purchase and get the tax back there, but it would be several days of travelling.

I'm glad you got a deal on your Rolex, efthimis.

/end thread highjack (sorry OP)

"Not WORTH buying in gen"
WORTH is really the key word here because its all subjective. What something is "worth" depends on a number things, all different to each person, all with diff values. There is no right or wrong here.
A lot of people would say buying a gen luxury watch is never worth it. I'm not in that camp, I own gens and reps.
I personally try to only buy reps that have super-rep status.
Black Pelagos is spot on. I've had gen and rep side buy side and it's nearly impossible to tell the difference by eye. I saw Pelagos was mentioned, def deserves to be on the list

Thank you very much!

I had the chance last week to have a good look on the SD4K, the genuine one.. I am a big fan of the rep and sometimes also thinking of going gen just because I love the watch and is on my wrist maybe 75% of the time.. I suppose everyone knows how good Noob V2 is and someone would say that's going gen doesn't really worth it. Well gen has some magical aura around it that makes it so much more special than its Chinese counterfeit.. This is how I see it and it's my personal view of course, I still understand people saying that people are crazy to spend 10 or 20k on "a watch", I am not that old so can understand the point indeed

For me and from where I stand is it not just buying a watch that looks like the gen or will not be called out easily, owning a gen is far beyond that and I believe that someone who agrees with me doesn't have to explain himself too much.. For me if I had the opportunity I would be having maybe 4-5 gens and still will be involved in the rep "hobby" that so much enjoy..

Stay well and enjoy your watches people [emoji6]

I have only ever bought a rep, apart from 2 PAMS I have always gone with Rolex Sub. I love them, by far my favourite watch.
I will get a Gen shortly and wear it for the rest of my life I think...

However strange thing happened the other night when I was out in my local town centre having a few beers. My V5 Sub had stopped working, I ordered the new V7 and sent V5 for repair. When I bought my V5 from Toro he had an offer on some PAMS at $158, I bought one, for that price it was a no brainer. So because I did not have a watch I wore this when I went out. I could not tell a real watch to a rep, ever, I am useless.

So I'm out and this guy, looked a bit of flash guy said "Nice watch Bro" I said "Yeah, dont worry, its not real, unfortunately" He then argued with me for about 15 annoying minutes that it was real, and he knew all about watches and I was saying it was fake to 'Avoid attention'
That is the first time really I have ever been spoken to about a watch. Even after telling him it was from China. I should have sold it him for like £200 but he totally refused to believe it was a fake.
Do people actually care anymore?
So is it really wise to spend 5k on a gen sub when nobody has even asked me about them ever. They just assumed they are real. I probably will still get one, in fact I know I will but as I browse the forums I start to like more and more watches... Tudor now taking my eye...
