We live in the golden age of rep collecting. Years ago I could see why people went gen but with reps like this, and PP prices and availability where they are, honestly, why bother? Better to buy a really good rep with all the functionality and 99% of the aesthetics, including movement, of the gen. At least you know what you're getting unlike increasingly today's grey market.

I bother. Actually I still go franken with my Daytona. With gen parts, the movement runs FAR better and smoother.

The entire balance, the entire automatic module, centre wheel with pinion, ratchet wheel, mainspring, chrono wheel, clutch, hammer for now, and train wheels etc to come.

I have the same one. Don't you think the SW hands are too wide and too white? I was wondering if it would be better to use the stock PPF hands...

At this point Mark, I honestly think is all due to the variant they used to replicate it with chances are, it’s spot on.
So with enough digging we can find a gen hand exactly like, therefore no point bothering.
Shine and finishing are much better on the SW or Buff hands, so the overall experience will be improved for sure.

The thing is there are super good custom rep but cost is so high that people are not willing to pay as rep. For example a super rep RM will cost more then a gen gold rolex. Most people will chose gen rolex over the rep rm.

Totally agree with you and everyone will make their own decision on how to spend their money. However, if we're talking about a PP 5712 as in the example above, $5K USD, while expensive for a rep, is 5% of the current grey market price and is practically indistinguishable from the gen. As said above, most dealers would not be able to tell the difference. Therefore, if you want the PP 5712 in gen (or very very close to gen) this is the way to go. Free sprung balance, excellent engraving, etc. Even if the movement were to fail, it is repairable. I know that I would not pay $100K for the gen and in this lifetime won't be able to buy retail from an AD, so if this were my grail watch, I'd buy an outstanding rep of it and treat it as if it were gen.

If someone has £35-45k for a rep they sure know better. Anyone buying this to me is at minimum considering passing it further as a gen a profiteering loads.

The one I posted only lacks the free sprung if I’m not wrong. Not an expert.

Rep world is now evolving years within months, there are already mega frankens in the gen market as gen watches. There are at least, minimum over 1500 units of 5711 that are cnc’d cases with Calatrava movements and some gen dial some “custom” dials, and I say this because of the guy who was arrested for doing this. Millions sold in watches that had genuine movements but were not genuine 5711s. Problem with the human nature is the greed, did he had to make a “gen” Tiffany Patek and try to sell it for u$1.5mil ? Definitely not, but greed is greed and thankfully he got caught for it.
Now we have free sprung 1:1 clones. I mean, at least 50% of the grey mkt dealers and wannabe dealers won’t freaking know the difference now.

Rep watch world will become the diamond world, problem is in the watch world people will actually loose “gen money” over frankens that are not worth that.

To define it in one word to a gen watch collector
