Too bad about the dial and tachy. My first impressions without reading this thread were Lego toys. Only did I see the gen did I realize it was a good piece. I don't see how the j12 is worse than the noob. Better case construction, screws and pushers with deco movement. that's a huge step forward, it would make a better base to mod than the noob, where you probably only used the movement and had to change literally everything.
It definately is huge improvement over the noob. We are just disappointed by the two crucial elements of this watch.
But if we hadn't seen the possibility to make it better such as that of zorro's and StevenLee's we would've had less complaints. Lol

I propose we bring back our rational heads around.

We've already seen hundreds of mods already. Rolexes, AP's and numerous others costing several thousands . This is no different.
I think I am becoming more comfortable with buying gp now. We at least know where and who to reach out if we felt the need to perfect it. ;-)

Okay, I have been seriously thinking: if I would buy the FC GP: how the h*ll could I get the red dial anodized with keeping the AP logo and Audemars piguet text on the dial in the same color.

If you would anodize the red dial the problem is that you got a small part that sticks out as being very light red (as you tape of that part), but what would a touch-up pen with red metallic could do with the dial. In this way you can make the dial red metallic and also work in more smaller corners with a small paint brush?

What do you guys of this idea? The advantage is also that you do not have to take the watch; hour hand and tachy hand apart; you can just change the position and then do the other part.

Touch up pens were originally designed for cars and cars bodyparts are plastics so that could work. I thought Ruby red metallic could be the one (as my ford focus station wagon is this color and I have a touch up pen lying around). But please think along with me.

So I see theses great pictures from Ken (Psycospike's) but don't see him listing either model for sale in his section. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Bro you will need completely paint the red part and use or sticker or print for text. The modders are using chrome paint base with cherry anodize varnish. Perhaps someone can make a step by step guide.

Definitely would not mind paying a premium to get the dial repainted and the proper tachy

That's a big no no. If you do it that way, there'll be paint smudges everywhere and risk the liquid to seep into the movement. You have to completely take the dial apart which means removing the hands as well to be able to paint it and get a uniform finish. I also don't recommend paint brush and liquid paint since it'll leave brush strokes and uneven paint if you're not careful. Only way to do it is by spray can or airbrush. Airbrush is the best option and even that, you have to keep from overspraying.

The AP logo isn't a problem since it can be removed. It's only held by 2 feet. As for the text, 2 options: using decal or using pad printing. Mikey2008 on RG has found the right guy to do pad printing.

That's what I thought . If you need to do it all, then you have to do it properly ... Spraying without taking the dial/watch apart is asking for more trouble ?? :giggle:

But that means we all need to buy that pad or is it some sort of sticker? But i was wondering if i use decal waterslide paper; should i cult it ou to mask the letters? or mask the entire text area?

I'm not sure about how pad printing works. I'll leave that to others more experienced with it.
Anyway, you shouldn't mask the text since as I mentioned previously, the bg red color will be different than the rest of the red on the dial. You can just respray the entire dial part, and then apply the decal after that. Either dry transfer or water slide decal would do. But until now, I haven't found someone that can reproduce the text crisply. So I guess decals are a temporary solution.

Guys, just stop dreaming. Repainting a dial is a hardcore job! Just for pro's.
You must be a expert for that kind of paint job, it's nothing like "let's try and see what happens".
Except you have 5-10 dials lie around for training.

Unfortunately J12 should saved us this trouble, and probably made them more money leaving everyone happy :smug:

The dial is actually most important part of any watch , it's what pops and it's the face of it . Yes the movement is also but as long as it keeps time, You can't actually see it till you turn it over .... Just like a woman who is 'not so appealing' in the face but an OK figure/body loool  ...The face is the first thing you notice haha

On a serious note J12 need to start paying attention to these dials ........

Thanks for the tip! I will just wait until somebody has found a solution that involves just buying and changing parts without me trying my out my painting skills. Until that I will not buy this watch and just wait what comes with regard to the FC.
johnnybaws; that's a good tip to move other things up.
Now it is only waiting time till they release the existing models with movement plating like the 44mm FC and Schumi. The Buemi is really a gen-like rep but I cant wear a watch named after one of the big F1 failures.

I'm not a Trulli fan (far from it) but "his" watch is superb!
But, you're right Buemi, how the hell did he get a watch named after him.. must have been that 7th place finish in Brazil?
What's next, the AP Taki Inoue?

To all those wanting the gold version...
The first post in this thread only shows 2 dials. Are we certain that there is a 3rd watch coming?
