Are the rep inserts bakelite or what?
I never knew I wanted one of these until this thread -- thanks, guys.

Others will be able to say so definitely but from what I understand yes, but some cheaper options are a different plastic.
Now if someone with Geiger Counter can tell me if they are radioactive that should tell us how truly authentic the rep-makers have become... Radium inside your watch... Mmmmmm :/

It's a bit more expensive but this will be a good purchase. It comes with a free insert, crown, tube, movement, bracelet and crystal as well - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VINTAGE-...050803?hash=item1c821d6cf3:g:O3UAAOSwWxNY0--Y
Was thinking this version a few more bucks but hey its only $$$

What about this...? http://www.ebay.com/itm/ROLEX-6036-...273118?hash=item2ef411589e:g:mv0AAOSwCypWoWo9
Just when I thought this thread was dead! Love our shenanigans btw
EDIT: He could have at least offered free shipping. :megalol:
I'm a couple of G's in on the build that Yodog posted above and I will say that doing this thing right isn't cheap. Some of us demand a higher level of aesthetic so there is value in throwing money at the build.
@TheSociety builds pieces that are beyond what most of us want or are willing to pay for but that's his passion. If you take the gen movement out of the equation you can have a piece that's 80% to 90% there on the level of appearance for $2,000ish. Just my opinion though.
The slippery slope of doing this build ... hmmmm back and forth on accuracy vs bucks vs how much I want one
That's where I'm standing too... cheap case, movement, hands, good bezel and dial? Then replace the movement/hands when you have cash, then the case...

I don't blame you guys! If you're not cursed with the gen movement bug you'll save quite a bit. However I will say that it's worth the $. Gen parts will Never lose value!
It doesn't just tell time. It tells history.
Genuine Movement Rolex Builds Thread
If we all went the way of @TheSociety then we would have nothing left to aspire too ... your builds always inspire me in execution, taste and quality
One option on the case is to get the cartel 1655 Explorer from Josh and shave off the crown guards. The case will take the T-116 and then you just have to get a retaining ring, bezel and the insert. The DG3804 movement is decent and low beat. This is what Joey B did over at RWG. Joey also used to make the bakelite inserts- don't know if he still does, but they were good quality. At that point you can build a 6542 for $750-1000.
One doesn't simply build a 6542, the 6542 destroys your life and then kicks you in the teeth when you're down.
