I received a super Uber awesome black bay v4 a couple of weeks ago. I fell in love immediately and was very happy. Only small gripe was the lume application was a little sloppy. The movement was kicking butt and taking names, running accurate to within a few seconds a day. Until after about a week in my possession I picked it up and it wouldn't start up with a shake or a hand wind! Uh oh. No problem, I knew that was part of the risk with a rep movement although I hoped to get at least a few months out of it.

My question now is:

Do I put in a swiss 2824 or do I service the a2824? Will the a2824 be reliable after a service as a swiss would be? The service I think would be about $160 where as a swiss would be about $240 plus install.

I also plan to inquire about having it relumed at the same time.

Thanks guys, I await the experienced suggestions

Oh man. It's no worries. It happens. After a service it will run for years and it's a great rep. Don't hesitate

Go Swiss if you love the watch. Otherwise buy a brand new Asian movement for under$100.

You think that is a better option than servicing the existing? Someone pointed out that the a2824 currently in it has the tudor branded rotor so if I want to keep that I should just have it serviced. I dint think I care about the rotor. Just want the most reliability for my buck $$. And I was the thinking about having vac relume it at the same time

Dude, open up the caseback. See if the oscillating weight fell off and if the screw is blocking a gear. If you open up the case back and don't notice anything unusual, then go to plan B and source another movement. I'd use a modder though. The hour hand construction isn't the best and the tubes are known to separate from the hand.

I wouldn't put a gen ETA 2824. Too much work to swap out a taller canon pin to clear the indices. Use a TC 2824 with a H4 canon pin. Direct drop in and really a good movement for the money. I have had 4 of them in my old TC's. As far as I know they are all still alive and taking a beating

You can easily swap a rotor. It is one screw. You can transfer that over easy!

Sounds like good advice. I'll start by opening the caseback. I have to admit I've never done that before so this will be cool. I think my brother may have the tools necessary. My watchmaking skills have progressed to sizing and removing bracelets, I think I'm ready for the next step lol

OP has not had much luck with TC movements but I hope this works out. I had a Few Tudor BB's and loved them all

I'm feelin' the mesh these days, Joey! Meshin' with the mesh!

I have only ever had one watch on mesh, it was a fossil. The only reason I kept it so long was because the mesh was super comfortable. I'm a fan of mesh. Now I gotta get a gen breatling SOH on mesh
