What do you guys think? Pics are below.

Interesting discovery bro. I'll try this on mine soon. I think given the apparent improvement without any noticeable downside, I will try spray enamel over the entire backside of the insert. I'll tape off the top side, excess paint on the edges is easily removed with thinner or acetone. That way a smooth even finish can be achieved that wont impact the level seating of the insert in the bezel well. Nice find!

Thanks KJ. Yeah, I will definitely go with an oil based paint for the final paint job. The acrylic paint is great to experiment with because it dries in about 10 minutes and easily peels off the ceramic.

Could just use a black Sharpie, those are oil based. Fast and easy. I've used various color Sharpies on aluminum insert edges a lot when they get the paint chipped off due to swapping around. I'll probably try it that way first, might even do the inside edge. It's possible that the translucence is what is causing the halo effect (lighter coloration) at the insert inner perimeter in the red near the crystal.

So I'm in the process of doing the KJ lip mod and I noticed the red portion of the insert is slightly translucent. So I got to thinking maybe applying some paint to the underside of the insert would change the color a tad. And I'll be damned it does! I applied a strip of black acrylic paint from 8 to 12 on the red and from 0 to 4 on the blue. The blue appears totally unaffected in any light (too opaque). However, the red actually stays a little darker in direct sunlight....so a little less of that orange/red color that comes out in direct sunlight. Still not really that close to the pinkish red hue of the Gen, but I think a modest improvement from the orange/red that's a dead giveaway in the sun. What do you guys think? Pics are below.

Please try white paint on the red bezel

Just tried using a sharpie and I couldn't quite get it to cover very well, especially on the edges. Based your suggestion above, I painted the inner and outer edges of the insert (b/w 6-12) and I think it definitely helped. The inner perimeter is a must, the outer perimeter likely less so...but it probably can't hurt. The video above has painted edges.

The new video is in! Below is in direct sunlight using black paint starting at the blue/red border at 6 through the outer edge of 12. Now that I see the video, I think this mod really shines when viewing the insert at angle. It's a more subtle change when viewing straight on, but at angle it makes a big difference IMO. What do you guys think?

I like the improvement to the red color a lot. I'm seeing some darkness around the numbers that seems unnatural though. A little bit around the 8 and 10 but especially around the 12 it looks shrouded with darkness. Maybe because the insert is thinner in those areas due to the marker cutouts, the black is showing through, IDK.

I think if I were doing this (and I will) I would experiment further, maybe try just doing the inner perimeter. Then depending on the outcome try a narrow strip on the underside, like up to but not into the marker cutouts from the inner perimeter. I think you are onto something here but maybe not quite there yet.

Yeah I see what you are seeing too....but IRL it is not really noticeable IMO. The other thing I picked-up on in the pics and the videos is I thought the speed bump at 6 became a little more pronounced after adding the black paint...but again IRL it is not really noticeable IMO.

Yeah, I'm seeing the marker darkening at 14 16 18 too so it's not wholly due to any underside coating. This might look completely different with the bezel on the watch. You can test that easily with the bezel gasket removed if you wanted to.

Just shot a video of the fluorescent pink neon paint in the same position where the black was (ie from 6 to 12). I removed the black paint first of course! It's getting a little late in the day here so the sun was not quite as bright as it was in the earlier video. In any event, I don't see much change. Maybe a hair lighter with the neon pink below? No dice on that one bro. Seeing usual halo translucence big time from 6 - 12.

Thick White paint should give the chance to avoid the halo effect, while do not affect the color of the numbers?
