To each his own. Every one of my rep watches is modded (even if it's just service and a gen strap) to be in the $500-$900 range. That makes me happy. If owning an $80 piece is good enough for you and makes you happy, that's great too. But I would not be interested an $80 rep, nor would I be in this hobby if that was the best that could be done quality wise.

It's kind of like scotch, the cheap shit used to be good enough until I got a taste for the more expensive stuff. Now I could never go back to the cheap shit :)

The point is, it's still a fake. You know it, the watchsmith knows it............ except you spent an extra few hundred or worse thousand rather than $100. You still have a fake, with no manual, no warranty, no box. Personally if I was going to spend $500 - -$2000 I'd either get ;

a. a variety of cheaper reps
b. a lower end gen
c. Save my money towards a gen
b. Buy a used gen

I'd just feel a chump spending that much on a fake watch............. but the dealer will love you, and no doubt laugh all the way to the bank. Like I said it's just got silly, it's almost a sub-culture of snobbery in fake watches, which itself is hilarious. The other thing is seeing who can get the brightest glow torch lume watch, WTF is that all about:lol1:

They are worth it if you enjoy them, yes. I am talking about what I pay apposed to what something is worth. We all buy things that have very little actual worth, yet still we find enjoyment out of them. If you'd have asked me 2 years ago if i'd ever buy a rep for more than 200 bux I'd have laughed in your face...Yet, I have now spent as much as 9 bills...
Insane? Well yeah, but it's my hobby.

Your $80 21j SOSF replica is not even close to the same as the new H-Factory SOSF.
The Swiss 2824-2 costs more than the 21j version alone!
And the new Noob fiddy/destro are in no way comparable to your old one.

Seriously, save up your dough and buy one of the newest super reps (the ones that are really 1:1). No way in hell they are worth $100.

The cheapie canal street quality ones are worth $100, but the amazing super reps (Seawolf, PAM's, Tag Aquaracer, Super Avenger, AP ROO, Omega PLOPROF, etc).

Also, who the **** hangs out at the dealer anyway? The only thing most of use care about is if it passes the 3ft test (you know, real world scenario).

And yes, you can have a very nice Oris for around $1000, but it still doesn't make the statement of a flawless AP rep (which costs $16K in gen form). I do agree some watches might not be worth it (Frankn PO, only a 2K difference from a franken to gen really). But any watch over $5000 is worth it.

I would own a franken Panerai and save $3000-20,000 (or more depending on rarity). As I dont hang out at my watchsmith or AD, I dont care if it passes the scrutiny of a loupe...

Yes to each his own and I am enjoying my reps and modding it. Some spend thousands modding their aftermarket guitars, bikes, guns etc. What I'm spending with my hobby, rep watches, is not even close to what others are doing. So for something I consider as a hobby, I'm still okay.

I'm in business. Over pricing is relative to what someone is willing to pay. There are cheap $80 reps that are good out of the box but, despite this, there are many that are shit too. So just know which ones you're gonna choose. If you just buy without much thought, be prepared to be called out with this higher probability. Remember, you only need to be called out ONCE to be labelled for a lifetime...

There is also a misguided notion that dealers will only love the ones buying higher rep watches. This does not necessarily apply not only in watches but to business in general as it's all about the margins. If someone's gonna dispute this, you're probably not in business bro...

I agree. The quality between $80 - $100 reps is considerable. I've ordered numerous watches from the same dealer around the same price point. Some are quartz so-so pieces with crappy leather bands, others are automatics with nice bands or stainless steel bracelets

You were sounding quite plausible, until you added 'bro' to the end of that :lol:

The only place those two flaws might ever bother me is when its time to sell. Sounds good otherwise - thanks.

There's the truth. Honestly, I dont care if others want to buy higher end or lower end than me. What I DO care about is that we can all come here and discuss without getting out panties in a bunch.

For those that buy higher end than me, go for it. I wouldnt go over $350 or possibly, maybe 400 some day.

For those that buy cheaper than me, that was me a year ago. There are some cheapies out there that I still will get because I like the look and can live with a quartz movement.

The beauty is that no toes really have to be stepped on here member to member. But as buyers looking through our TD's stock, the lower-end watches are thinning out and the quality ones are coming with higher and higher price tags. That is a fact, and a big part of the OP's point.

If this is true, why are there no threads asking? ..... "Why on earth do you guys buy low priced reps?" Because this "sub-culture" does not exist. We are all in the same club.

Why not have the best lume possible? To some people that is most important. What is so funny about that? It sounds like you don't care and I won't laugh at you for that.

If luminesence is the most important thing on a watch I've got a suggestion. Buy an LED display :biglaugh:

Or one of those Timex Indiglow or whatever they're called.

Exactly how much time does one spend in the dark looking at watches, unless you're a full-time cinema usher waiting to get off work of course :biglaugh:

I do remember being fascinated with my first Timex glowing in the dark, but then I was about 7 years old :lol:
