You make a fair point about gen VS rep knives.
However let me ask you a question (you're probably qualified to answer as you seem to know a bit about knives).
What do you think the difference is between a $20 Ganzo G704 and a replica spyderco?
I ask because I've seen a video review of the Ganzo G704 in HARD conditions and it seemed to perform extremely well. And I probably will never use it to THAT extent.
I actually have the Ganzo you mentioned at home. It holds up remarkably well, I do notice quite a bit of rust spotting on the blade if its not kept oiled. That's not really a bad thing, it shows the knife has a higher carbon content than stainless steel, so it can actually be sharpened/hold an edge longer. I couldn't put it against the rep Spyderco, as I haven't had a chance to fool around with one, but it would probably hold up just fine to a point (no pun intended). The Ganzo is a copy of a Benchmade 14205 (HK) knife, and they have notoriously thick-er blades. It is something i'd classify as a heartier tool knife than the Spyderco.
I would hate for any knife to fail on me when needed, so I stick to the knives I know and trust. A rep knife couldn't get that endorsement from me, unless its been sold/used for years and has hundreds of other people that haven't had failures with it.
With all that said, I generally carry either a Tanto Emerson Mini Commander, A Benchmade Pardue 530, or a Spyderco PM2.
