40mm or Under...what to do

Hey guys,

I'm stuck unfortunately with smaller wrists (currently exploring wrist implants). I want a watch in the 40mm or under range. Do you guys have any recommendations? I'd like it to be a quality rep in terms of closeness to the gen, but want to stay away from the Rolex reps. Want something a little more subtle.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Are you like for a dressy watch that will go well with suits, sport watch or something in between? Watch fashions have changed quite in the past 15 years. I the late 90's most mens were 36mm (even Breitling Chronomats from that period were 38mm--and they looked big next to the rest of the watches on display). The Rolex Submariner (40mm) was simply huge. Now it's practically midsized. In the early to mid 2000's things got bigger--watches went up to 40mm on average and 42mm were big. At the moment, big is in and the average high end mass market watches start in the 41 to 42mm range and that Rolex sub that was so big 15 years ago is looking rather midsize.

My point is that if you have been wearing smaller watches because you have smaller wrists and hands, you can still go big. All it means is that a 42mm watch on you would have the same presence and proportion as a super avenger on a big wrist. It's just a matter of taste and comfort.

I suggest you go to an AD with a large selection and try on different gens to see what you like and feel comfortable with (not to mention it's fun to try $20,000 plus watches). After your have picked a couple of watches and modes you like, come back here and start research the reps. You can get nuts looking at our TD's sites and trying to make a decision from pictures and a spec sheet. I don't think that works. Lots of people make purchases based on pictures alone--which partially explains why there are so many watches in the rep sales section. Try on the gen and minimize the risk of buyer's remorse.

If you do go down to an AD, I would suggest you try a few of the more popular choices here:

1. Rolex Submariner: While this was once considered a big watch, at 40mm it's pretty much average (mid) size for a full size mens watch.

2. Rolex Yacht-Master: Same size as sub.

3. Tag Heuer Carrera: There are a number of models both standard auto's and chrono's and they range in size from 38 to 41mm. The bezels on these watches are also thin and the bracelets have a tapered design, which may be more comfortable for you. Even the chrono's at 41mm wear small IMO. While you're there, try on a Grand Carrera too, which is 43mm--just for perspective. I happen to really like this line of watches and there are quite good reps of them available.

These watches all sporty, but could be comfortably worn with a suit (something I can't say for some of the monsters out there like man of the Pams and SOFS--which are not only large but also think, bulky and don't slide easily beneath the cuff of a dress shirt).

Anyway--that's my two cents.

Hi marshal
You should indicate the type of watch you want: sporty, dressy, sub.... modern, classic... bracelet, strap... there are alot of options even in this range of size.
BTW- very good reply from set2374

Thanks set,

I'm with you as far as the 42mm. I actually have a Omega 42mm Planet Ocean that I love. Just want something a little smaller and a little more subtle.

I would like to stay away from Rolex...and I have done some research and am kind of leaning towards an IWC Mark XVI. I just keep hearing mixed reviews about it. But I haven't really looked at the Tags, so I'll look into that suggestion.

Seriously, thanks for taking the time to write this up.

Ale,

I'm looking for more of a casual wearer. I wouldn't mind if it was able to dress up too.

I was kind of leaning towards the IWC Mark XVI, but people seem to think that the hands and AR are too far off. But some really like it and the factories seem to update it quite a bit.

So something in that line, but I don't think I'd want to go black leather, because that seems to dress it up. So if I went IWC, I'd have to think about putting another strap on it. Something to make it a little more casual.

I've even thought about going vintage. Those have cool looks too.

Hope that helps.

Non Rolex: AP Royal Oak Jumbo, Patek Aquanaut Jumbo....more on the dressy side imo but in the 40mm range and nice quality. 42mm PO, Omega 42mm Seamaster Chrono are good as well. PAM 090 is ok as well but not many good reps of those.

Rolex: 39 or 36 mm explorer, 36mm Datejust, Submariner, Yachtmaster

OP - how big is your wrist?

I have a fairly small wrist and believe I can pull off 44mm Pam's pretty well.

Also - often it's not the size of the wrist, but also the shape that makes a difference.

Most of the Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe are around 42mm.
Dressy but more modern are the ladies 38mm HBB, they look a bit bigger and are very good against the gens.

I have about a 7" wrist. I own a PAM 026k, and don't like the size or look of it on my wrist. I'm actually probably going to sell it, I just don't wear it anymore. That's kind of why I want to get into the smaller sizes.

i have a 6.75'' wrist and i also wear pams and hublots. but for some reason its hard to make them daily wearers. both the size and weight dont make them ideal for me. for daily wearers i tend to stick to 42mm and below and throw in a bigger watch every now and then.

Few good options < 40mm out-of-the-box

Rolex Explorer (but you are not into rolex)
Mark XVI (39mm, not a flawless rep but a very good watch overall)
IWC GST Ti or SS (39mm)
Omega Aqua Terra Railmaster (39mm)

Do you own the Mark XVI? Are the flaws even noticeable in normal use?

Did you get a chance to drop by an AD this weekend? I was actually in costco (getting the usual) and noticed they had a blackfaced pam daylight, a Super Avenger, Cartier Calibre and 2 Tag Carrera Chrono on display (one tt and one all black and a black leather racing strap). The pam and Super Avenger are just absolutely massive watches that scream for attention. The cartier is very classy looking and, while it holds itself out as a sporty watch, it is definitely on the dressy side. This brings me back to the Carrera. As a daily wear, they are really great looking. They have plenty or presence without being overwhelming--particularly the all black version. It's a more tapered style that, to my eyes (and wrists), is a more comfortable wear for an everyday watch. Many guys seem to have an issue with two tone watches, but the TT Carrera is also hell of nice looking watch. The gold definitely makes this more of a dress watch and the retail on the gen isn't so absurd that it would be an obvious rep.

I really enjoy wearing my Mark XVI. I have 6.5" wrists and here's a pic. The bracelet is the way to go. the size is perfect and looks very acceptable as a rep.

I'm looking for a Mark XVII 3717 to see how I like that but I really like my XVI 3255

I bought a PP Aquanaut 5167 a few months ago and it rarely leaves my wrist. 39mm AP 15202 or 15300 are good ones as well. The quality of the Aquanaut is fantastic, btw. IWC Portofino is another possiblity.
