Are you like for a dressy watch that will go well with suits, sport watch or something in between? Watch fashions have changed quite in the past 15 years. I the late 90's most mens were 36mm (even Breitling Chronomats from that period were 38mm--and they looked big next to the rest of the watches on display). The Rolex Submariner (40mm) was simply huge. Now it's practically midsized. In the early to mid 2000's things got bigger--watches went up to 40mm on average and 42mm were big. At the moment, big is in and the average high end mass market watches start in the 41 to 42mm range and that Rolex sub that was so big 15 years ago is looking rather midsize.
My point is that if you have been wearing smaller watches because you have smaller wrists and hands, you can still go big. All it means is that a 42mm watch on you would have the same presence and proportion as a super avenger on a big wrist. It's just a matter of taste and comfort.
I suggest you go to an AD with a large selection and try on different gens to see what you like and feel comfortable with (not to mention it's fun to try $20,000 plus watches). After your have picked a couple of watches and modes you like, come back here and start research the reps. You can get nuts looking at our TD's sites and trying to make a decision from pictures and a spec sheet. I don't think that works. Lots of people make purchases based on pictures alone--which partially explains why there are so many watches in the rep sales section. Try on the gen and minimize the risk of buyer's remorse.
If you do go down to an AD, I would suggest you try a few of the more popular choices here:
1. Rolex Submariner: While this was once considered a big watch, at 40mm it's pretty much average (mid) size for a full size mens watch.
2. Rolex Yacht-Master: Same size as sub.
3. Tag Heuer Carrera: There are a number of models both standard auto's and chrono's and they range in size from 38 to 41mm. The bezels on these watches are also thin and the bracelets have a tapered design, which may be more comfortable for you. Even the chrono's at 41mm wear small IMO. While you're there, try on a Grand Carrera too, which is 43mm--just for perspective. I happen to really like this line of watches and there are quite good reps of them available.
These watches all sporty, but could be comfortably worn with a suit (something I can't say for some of the monsters out there like man of the Pams and SOFS--which are not only large but also think, bulky and don't slide easily beneath the cuff of a dress shirt).
Anyway--that's my two cents.
