I ordered a Black Dial VSF 126500 but the first QC pictures showed some issues...
- The Large Chronograph Hand was aligned slightly off center.
- The 6:00 Dial Marker was just a little too crooked.
- The Timegrapher showed good Amplitude at 293, but the Rate was + 7 s/d.
- To be honest, I think that most would still accept this QC, but I have seen better examples.
In researching the DD4131 movement Daytonas, I found a number of pictures showing the Large Chronograph Hand being aligned slightly off center. I contacted another Member who has two VSF 126500s, and he confirmed that his Large Chrono Hands can move very slightly, even by just tilting the watch from side to side.
This is what changed my mind. This may be an isolated problem with an early batch of DD4131s, but I didn't want to take that chance.
Some have speculated that VSF and Clean use the same source for Dials, but my TD says this is not true.
My TD showed me another VSF QC that was better, but I had already changed my order to a Clean 126500.
The second VSF QC...
- The Large Chronograph Hand was again aligned slightly off center, but not as far.
- The 6:00 Dial Marker was also much better.
- The Timegrapher again showed good Amplitude at 280, and the Rate was better at + 3 s/d.
- Both VSFs still have the Crown with the three dots being too large.
Then I received the QC for the Clean...
- The Large Chronograph Hand was aligned exactly in the center.
- All of the Dial Marker were straight.
- The Timegrapher showed Amplitude at 286, and the Rate was + 1 s/d.
I have done a lot of research on these Daytonas and this was not an easy choice.
I have a V3 Clean 116500 and the DD4130 in that watch winds very smoothly has been great. I also have a V3 Clean GMT with a DD3285 that has also been a great watch.
I was torn because I have had such good luck with both Clean Watches and DD Movements.
I ordered the VSF first because some said that the quality was as good as Cleans, and I also wanted the DD4131 movement.
After seeing the QC photos and doing more research, now I'm not so sure.
- Clean has been making running improvements to the SH4131 and they now call it a V2. Some also say that the winding gets smoother over time.
- VSF is better in some areas and Clean is better in others. I guess as usual, you have to do your research and then decide what details are most important to you.
- In my case I guess I traded off smoother winding, a better Rehaut finish, and a slightly better Crystal for a slightly better Dial, correct Crown, better Timegrapher results, and a Chrono Hand that will stay centered.
- I am not saying that the Clean 126500 is better than the VSF. I'm just sharing my opinion and how I made the choice that I did.
