Good points. But a functional rattrapante is cool enough to merit a buy regardless of the case back. The surprise here is that they chose to go for a rattrapante/doppelchronograph functioning movement before releasing a flyback movement.
Regarding your comment on 213/253, you are incorrect. The rattrapante limited edition from 2007 was Model 286. Similar to the 253 fkyback except with rattrapante movement.
The 253 is the special edition a fly back from 2006 similar to the 212.

I opine the same. I think it's distortion more than anything. The biggest flaw on all releases up until now has been a very sad one and it's that these domed panerais have ALL been released with mineral crystal and not genuine sapphire crystal. It's especially annoying since this crystal is more prone to bumps and scratches as it sits above the watch surface of the bezel.
I've had 4 or 5 since 2006 and all have gotten scratched no matter how hard I try to keep them perfect. I started a crystal project a few years back if you all remember but my sample crystal ended up getting stolen by wholesaleoutlet990 and they used an incorrect crystal shape to start production without consulting me and left me with an unsatisfactory crystal and my hard earned work down the drain.
This new maker needs to understand $688 is rather high for a panerai rep, even with a functional rattrappante complication. A more reasonable price will ensure it gets a good chunk of the competitive rep market.

I don't think they (VSF) came out with 1312 yet right? I believe zf 1312 is the most accurate one at the moment. Or did vsf release the 1312 as well?
The issue is you have no idea what it cost them to replicate the movement or the additional cost to the watch. There are lots of reps that have high price tags.

I don't know and it doesn't matter to me what it cost them. If they're hoping to recoup it all in one rep that's a bad business strategy and, honestly is price gouging. A rattrappante complication is not an obvious enhancement in a Pam rep. At this price, I'll pass.
Interesting idea, but you don't buy a Porsche for a Honda price in the real world so why would this be any different? They run a business and if the watch cost them 3 times the cost to make, they are going to charge 3 times as much.
