Just for context, I just shipped a genuine watch I repaired and restored to my Father in the UK for a Father's Day gift.

I marked it as a gift and truthly told it's value. It was shipped via UPS international.

I got the tarrif notification yesterday as it hit Castle Donnington. Just over $100. I paid if of course, but jesus. I'm seriously upset at this.

WTF ?????

So I guess I won't be buying anything from USA again then

Cheeky motherfuckin' Trump, even that surname colloquially means FART, which at his age and size I estimate that the rancid smell of the aforementioned bowel release would kill a whole field fulla wild cattle :ROFLMAO:

Outbound would not be affected by the constantly shifting landscape for tarrifs inbound. As of now, the des minimums is still in effect for pretty much everywhere but China and Hong Kong so unless shipping an expensive gen, things should be status quo for anything inbound. I've gotten 2 from @P..DR..D in the last couple of weeks without issue as things would normally have gone, EU has always charged inbound VAT duties based on the package value, at least as long as I've been doing this, nothing to do with Trump or the current confusing situations he's created.

There are no outbound tariffs unless something has changed in the last week I'm not aware of. .

I hear what you are saying, but perhaps @davelister could clarify, because the way I read his post above he didn't get a VAT bill based upon value, which in UK will normally go to the recipient, (importer).

What he said was he (Dave Lister) got a tarriff bill as soon as it got to what I assume would be a Mail inbound sorting centre / customs.

Since I've imported many USA Car Parts over my millenial years all I've ever got is a VAT bill as you correctly say.

Probably a combination of UK tariffs and VAT.

Sending gifts to England can incur tariffs (Customs Duty) and Value Added Tax (VAT), depending on the value and type of goods
.
Here's a breakdown:
  • Customs Duty:
    • Gifts valued under £135 are generally exempt from Customs Duty.
    • Gifts valued between £135 and £630 may be charged at 2.5% or less, depending on the specific goods.
    • Gifts valued over £630, and any other goods over £135, are subject to higher rates determined by the type of goods (commodity code) and the country of export.
    • Customs duty is typically calculated on the value of the item plus shipping, packaging, and insurance costs.
  • Import VAT:
    • Gifts valued under £39 are exempt from Import VAT.
    • Gifts valued at £39 or more are subject to Import VAT, typically at the standard rate of 20%.
    • VAT is charged on the value of the goods, plus postage, packaging, insurance, and any customs duty owed.

I think the UK is the culprit here.

When you may need to pay

When you send gifts to someone in the UK you may need to pay Customs Duty, excise duty and import VAT, depending on the value of the items.

For goods to qualify as a gift a customs declaration must be completed, and the gift:

  • must be sent from a private person outside the UK to a private person or people in the UK
  • should not have been paid for either directly or indirectly by anyone in the UK
  • should be of an occasional nature only (for example, for a birthday, Christmas or anniversary)
Gifts over £39 are liable to import VAT. Customs Duty also becomes payable if the value of the goods is over £135.

If you purchase something for delivery from outside of the UK as a gift for someone, it will not be treated as a gift for customs purposes. This applies even if the gift comes into the UK addressed directly to the receiver of the gift.

If the goods you’re sending are not gifts you can find more information on Tax and customs for goods sent from abroad.

So I just got off the chat from Pirate ship, and they said it was not tarrif (my mistake), but a combination of UPS brokerage fees, VAT and customs via an "expedited label", which I didn't pay nor ask for. They told me that to avoid this in the future, to use USPS to ship there.

The thing is that I already DID use USPS, but USPS misscanned the label as defective and so sent it back. Pirateship didn't know if they were at fault so suggested I use UPS.

I just joked with my wife that my Dad's Father's Day gift might have gotten more expensive, but since he's 81, I'll get that watch back eventually anyway. I think she's calling divorce attorneys now.

Is anyone else even more inspired to buy reps now? I've ordered and received two since the whole tariff meltdown became official; I'm giggling and rubbing my hands together getting off to the fact that they "slipped" through customs amidst all this nonsense. I'm considering buying another solely for the rush... I just love people melting down over this while I'm receiving reps

I really don’t think things are slipping through anything. If your watch is declared as plastic keyboard parts with a tariff value of $5.00, and the TD pays the $1.50 tariff to the shipping company (FedEx or UPS), the only way the watch slipped though was that it was not opened, inspected and confiscated (just like the old days, but now the TD had to pony up $1.50).
