I purchased this from watchguy sometime ago and just had it fitted with a roman dial . Should be back soon and I will snap some pics of this beauty. Pic below is from MMM whom did the work.

Here a pic of my ultrarare silver twbest 18239

It will be fitted with a gen black stick dial.

Weighs nearly as much as gen with 135 gr. (Yg gen is 135 to 138 with all links)

That roman dial looks aftermarket or refinished to me.

The swiss made writing, especially the "made" is too far off and the romans are too close to the railroad

Also the Rolex Coronet looks different than gen

Actually your dial looks alot like the stock dial on my silver twbest above, especially the rolex coronet looks similiar

Compare it with gen pics

Great thread. One of dad's coworkers (they worked together at an AD) once talked about some Asian reps that were made from "real gold" and that they passed the acid test. I always thought he was either f.o.s or had been drinking on his lunch break that day. 20 years later, I learn the old drunk was right. Lol

These two are over 20 years old. I was lucky to be able to get these. The gold on each watch is solid 18K gold. Not wrapped, and not plated. I said SOLID!

I have worn the heck out of both, and after all these years they are still looking pretty good and holding up.
Both have genuine SWISS ETA movements too.

Fantastic thread, thanks for posting.

I would actually be interested in buying a solid gold 40mm DD if one of the TD's or factories would offer a quality rep in this configuration. Probably never happen at this point though.

Unfortunately the closest you are going to get at this point is the BP 18k wrapped dd40 which I can confirm the color is almost as good as TW Best and Gen. and believe me that says something bc I've been searching for years for an accurate gold replacement for my TW best!

Also If gen dd40 parts weren't so rare and expensive I'd make a really nice franken out of the 18k wrapped case and bracelet.

Yes, I own a couple of the BP 40's. One SS and the other RG. The color is pretty good on the RG model. Overall I'm fairly happy with them, but they definitely don't have the weight of a gen, which is why I'd love to build a sold 18k version.

My silver twbest weighs about the same as gen in he ballpark of 140 grams (gen yg is 135) but its also an older reference (18239) which didnt have as much gold as the newer 6 digit

I am amazed and wondering how this could be achieved.

The head is amazingly heavy

Yes weight is no comparison. I had the plated version before the wrapped and the weight feels much better on the wrist then the plated did but no where near gen weight obviously.

What's great about a TW best is the fact they are made to reference the older models which were much less weight then the current line of day dates so the weight is scary accurate as @gamba66 has mentioned.

This model is even rarer and better than a gold wrap one because it can be polished and wont rub off off. This is the best version to own in my opinion.

Wrapped gold may have a better color and thicker mass than plated gold but plated gold (even though alot less is used in the process, 5 to 10 microns) is more durable because it reacts with the base metal while wrapped gold only is "wrapped" on top of the base metal. This makes the plated gold more durable than wrapped gold because on impact damage wrapped gold is rubbed off while plated dents with the base metal it reacted with. Although wrapped gold used more gold in the process its still not really a sufficient amount to be really worth sonething. The wrapped gold on the twbedt is most likely not any thicker than 20 microns .

Both metals will rub off after a while and wrapped gold is not replatable (in any easy or cost efficient way) also brushing and polishing it is problematic

Thats why I prefer the steel version, because it can always be restored with light brushing and polishing and will look good for ages.

Weight is like gen (135gr with all links, gen yg is 138 with all links on) I believe the yellowgold twbest weighs less because of the base metal used?

Also all parts sre interchangeable with gen such as bezel, crystal, crown and dial.
