No gloss coat , have yet to try it I am a bit concerned that the solvents in the clear may mess with the air brush paint. I will do a practice dial and see how that works out first before I commit to a complete dial . I am going to try a gloss water based polyurethane finish ( think I have some at my studio) I think that may be the best option , I also need to see if I can shot it with my air brush or not. The style of tropical dials that I am able to produce are the weathered look from moisture / uv . Still using this gen to base my work off of.

I think I have gotten alot closer to this style than previous attempts. I dont think I will be able to achieve those minty tropical gloss dials simply because I am applying the finish over the text. IF was able to get the dial plates first, then do my tropical work and then have them pad printed I would be able to achieve that ,

I am putting an order in with Raffles this week So I will order a few more dials and do them up and then probably sell them off that way , or you can contact me directly and we can discuss ordering one . Shoot me a DM and lets talk! I may also order standard dial and see how adding the tropical effect will work on those ??

perhaps something like this..

or I might be able to achieve something like this with the new 6610 dials that raffles has released.

looks nice.

Could this be some kind of replica. It looks a bit too perfect to my eyes.
No I dont think so. This is the ideal tropical dial no signs of damage or exposure , only the coloured pigments were effected by UV This is a tight serial ranger for a specic run of dials Its what dreams are made of. I do find it interesting that the gloss finish remains but the pigments were effected

Most other tropical dials involve some level of exposure to moisture / elements to create the effect.

If this was some sort of aftermarket dial I would buy one instantly.

Having taken a break from working on these for a while however I recently revisited it after coming across this tropical dial beauty on IG

I cant stop staring at it. the color, the faint pattern on the dial the patina on the hands I have become obsessed with this watch.

Its amazing to me how the dial has transformed from a gloss black to that in 60 of exposure to result in such beauty .

so having a spare tropical kicking around I wanted to try and replicate that faint pattern and aging on the dial

I used a diluted brown paint , sprayed onto a sponge and then dabbed the dials surface lightly to try and replicate that pattern.
then using the air brush I gave it a few "spritz" of the same brown to give variation and age to reduce the new appearance of the dial and a slight sunburst effect making the center of the dial appear lighter and fade to a darker tone towards the outside edge of the dial. all very subtle and kind hard to capture on an iPhone

Not bad.

same here. I love those tropical dials but I have a hard time with the lume "overspills" on the numbers and indices

If i get any overspray. I address it as i work while the paint is still wet. I dab it with old rodico.

i meant the edges of the numbers that are not neat 😅
Well ...aren’t you critical. Im doing the best with what i got. And such minor things are not visible on the wrist Its supposed to represent a damaged dial. Most gens arent perfect either 🤷🏻‍♂️
