might as well keep this thread updated with progress
Did a bit more practice on the Tropical dials last night.
baked both brown and caramel in the oven 250 f 15 mins face down in coffee.
10 mins face up in coffee
I wanted to see how the paint and more importantly the lume would react.
I was pleased. The lume on the brown dial went more of an ochre colour. some of the coffee stuck to the lume.
the caramel dial dulled down and the lume lightened slightly also. - I think I might go a few more rounds as I want the caramel dial to turn more of a brownish.
I set them on the window sill to cool next to my pie. lol
Then I added some soot weathering paint to the edge of the caramel dial to look like the trace remanence of black pigment . a bit too subtle once installed so I may add more after a second back.
pic of the first time I backed a caramel dial when they first came out last year. going to go more of this look.
I want the caramel to resemble this example from Africa
The brown one I used the air brush with chestnut and ochre colours.
the chestnut on the outter edges and then a touch of ochre in the center to lighten the center area of the dial and create a bit of a fade to the brown and into the chestnut.
pleased for a first attempt but I think I am locked in on a technique here so when I get another batch of these dials, you should see some pretty cool tropical fades.
in a macro they look a bit rough yet, but this was just practice to see how I can work with the colour.
next to the first attempt Id say the second one is going in the right direction. Im diggin it.
I would bake it face up on coffee again but skip face down to avoid coffee damaging the lume
Plan on making further progress today.. will report back with results.
