REVIVING THIS THRED !

Since raffles new brown tropical dial has reignited my passion for the tropical dials. I am going to work on some more of these.

this was my first attempt with the new brown tropical dial
I have a few more en route as I plan on going a little bit further with one to see how it goes.

might as well keep this thread updated with progress

Did a bit more practice on the Tropical dials last night.

baked both brown and caramel in the oven 250 f 15 mins face down in coffee.
10 mins face up in coffee
I wanted to see how the paint and more importantly the lume would react.

I was pleased. The lume on the brown dial went more of an ochre colour. some of the coffee stuck to the lume.
the caramel dial dulled down and the lume lightened slightly also. - I think I might go a few more rounds as I want the caramel dial to turn more of a brownish.

I set them on the window sill to cool next to my pie. lol

Then I added some soot weathering paint to the edge of the caramel dial to look like the trace remanence of black pigment . a bit too subtle once installed so I may add more after a second back.

pic of the first time I backed a caramel dial when they first came out last year. going to go more of this look.

I want the caramel to resemble this example from Africa

The brown one I used the air brush with chestnut and ochre colours.
the chestnut on the outter edges and then a touch of ochre in the center to lighten the center area of the dial and create a bit of a fade to the brown and into the chestnut.

pleased for a first attempt but I think I am locked in on a technique here so when I get another batch of these dials, you should see some pretty cool tropical fades.

in a macro they look a bit rough yet, but this was just practice to see how I can work with the colour.
next to the first attempt Id say the second one is going in the right direction. Im diggin it.

I would bake it face up on coffee again but skip face down to avoid coffee damaging the lume

Plan on making further progress today.. will report back with results.

Tropical update.
Caramel dial

baked for another round face down in coffee
350F for 15 mins.

An idealcaramel brown has been achieved. the text is ghosted at certain angles but at others it pops.
I am very pleased with this one. It looks brighter in the pics than irl but that is the magic that happens when the light hits it

I need a tropical caramel neg rev gilt dial in my life....

gen inspiration :

the Rwandan 1016

I redid the dial this afternoon.
I got it dialed in now...but my concern is , does it look too tobacco sunburst now more than tropical?

I think it looks fine. Just a different kind of patina pattern. Is this the caramel dial That u posted recently?

Thanks I just thought it looks a bit too symmetrical to look natural

No this is one of the new darker brown tropical dials from Raffles.
I used an ochre colour on the center part of the dial to make it look lighter...in the pics it looks similar to the caramel colour on the other dial
