Adding my latest 34mm to the thread. A 6429 Commando.
Things I learned:
Seiko NH movements aren't the best choice for the 34mm cases. They're great movements, and can be made to work, but require removing the plastic ring from the movement and fabricating a new one. The issue is, they're too big with the plastic ring, but without it, they're not set solidly enough in the case to allow the crown to be pressed in to wind, once you pull it out to set the time. I 3D printed mine, but some have used zip ties. Regardless, for ease of assembly, ETA 2824 is probably the best choice. The movement was also a little tall for some crystals, as mine was rubbing on my hands. I set them deeper, but no luck, so I made a dial spacer to move the movement away from the glass a fraction of a millimeter.
ALIX makes a decent Jubilee bracelet in 19mm or 20mm for $5. It's not going to pass for gen under close scrutiny, but it offers a different look for a reasonable price. Eventually, I'll probably swap for an Oyster, leather strap, or NATO, but for now, I'm kind of enjoying it.
Raffles Commando hands have some QC growing pains, as one member here got a defective set, and mine came with a seconds hand that is way too short.
Caveats aside, on to the build:
*I used a gen Rolex 1500 case and bezel, because they're still relatively cheap if you do some searching.
*Raffles dial and hands that I aged with Tamiya weathering powder, after spraying the dial with a couple coats of matte acrylic.
*I lumed with a DIY mix of acrylic paint and raw luminous powder.
*NH38 movement with a DIY movement holder and dial spacer
*Clarks Tropic 13 crystal
*AliX 6mm Crown and Jubilee Bracelet, since I bought a few to experiment with and wanted to work one into a build to see how I liked it.
