by the way, here is my first serious 1016 i ever built:

- 1016 Vietnam case set
- 1016 Vietnam mk1 dial
- best combination of hands to mimic RSC 1016 service hands. The original 1016 hands have longer minute hand and longer second hand, which are both pretty much impossible to find as aftermarket parts. All hands were relumed.
- gen 600 crown
- ETA 2840 setting lever (for no phantom date position)
- Swiss Selitta sw200 (2824-2) movement

The bezel currently measures 35.34mm. I will reduce the circumference to make it look better.

Welcome to the party Bud! nicely done!

@HSV726 Can you show me some pics of your watch that you reduced the rehaut?
I wonder how much you reduced. It would be great if you had pictures taken during the work.
Found it quite difficult to photograph but pic below (had lots off issues with dial / hand fitment hence the damage)

No pics of the actual process I’m afraid, it’s really straightforward just a new piece of 400 grit wet and dry paper (sandpaper) and working it an even number of strokes on each direction ( up down left right)

*The sandpaper goes abrasive side up on a dead flat surface and the mid case is pushed down onto it then moved across it to remove the material

I did this on my last build which used a Raffles mid case (pics earlier in the thread) I can’t remember the exact amount but I recall it more or less halving the height,

Was easy enough to do I used a 400grade piece of wet and dry on a flat surface and moved the mid case N S E W across it in an even number of stokes, took about ten minutes to complete

I didn’t remove any height off the crystal or bezel and they fitted fine, I would be interested in trying to remove some height from the crystal and see how it looks if I was to do it again

Made a big difference to my eyes, it bugged me previously about the case as the tall rehault made the dial looked too recessed into the case (IMO)

The Ruby case does appeal to me as it’s flatter in profile and also has a higher crown, these are two details that I don’t believe can be replicated with a Raffles case,
If my memory correct you removed 0.4mm.

This is a Rabbit hole. . .
I was happy with my Raffles build a few days ago.
Now, I want more. New bezel, new glass, dial, hands, crown . . .the list goes on.

It's all you chaps fault on this thread.
Fr. I was okay with just watching the 369 dial at first, but now I'm desiring something better.
I feel like I'm being sucked into a swamp..
I'm a college student. I should've bought an iPad and I'm just spending all my money on the 1016 😂

Right; 0.4mm - okay. I will add it to the list of modifications to be done.
Do we know if this puts a flat saphire crystal as out of bounds because of effectively raised hands height?

This one came from @pompompurin last year, usually on a rattly folded bracelet but I love it on the Colareb vegan strap too.
Sometimes I fancy putting a plain bezel on it, though I do love the engine turned 1007 one.I have no way of doing that myself though.

Easily my most worn watch, 34mm is the business! Work, running, hiking, biking, does it all!

Gen case set, Swiss mvt, Vietnam dial and Raffles hands.

I don’t think that would be an issue unless you also lowered the height of the crystal (this is not something I did on this build), the overall height of the watch is unchanged it’s just a visual change really

I wouldn’t get too hung up on the exact measurement I kept removing a bit at a time and the testing the dial to see how it looked, I eventually stopped when I found a balance between the look I was after and what I thought was enough material to still give me a good purchase for the crystal

One of my favorite watches to wear is a vintage 34mm Air King. I like the low key, subtle functionality of it. I actually came across an old 5500 case set (and purchased another) that I plan on building up into an Explorer and either a Commando or Explorer Date (with a gen dial I have).

Still scrounging up all the parts, but looking forward to my first Franken builds.

Imagine this but with a gen 1016 service dial lol
notching the movement plate! Cool idea! I assume you strip down the movement to perform the custom work?
Nicely done on preserving the gen dial feet. I recall this being discussed a few years back with the idea of drilling holes to mount on the plate would that not be easier than notching it? less material to remove. ?

Well done my friend. (y) (y)

Yup, notching the movement indeed. It can be done, but the distance between the dial feet and critical parts are extremely close, so there is a risk when notching. And yes, the movement needs to be disassembled.

Notching is easier to me than drilling because I don't have a drill press and notching provides a bigger gap for dial alignment

Of course - you're right. I should have thought more before posting. The xtel height remains unchanged relative to the dial height.

This is my last 1016 build. I admire you guys for you attention to the smallest details but J have to confess that it does not mean that much to me. I love the building process, working on case and dial, but for md its enough when I just like the Look of the outcome. It's all about fun

P.S. Sorry for the Bad pics
